Prairie du Chien’s Owen Achenbach follows through on a chip onto the first green at Prairie du Chien Country Club Thursday.

The Blackhawk boys golf team opened up their SWC season on Tuesday, April 19 at the Lancaster Country Club. The match started with sunshine and warm weather for once but changed as the sun disappeared behind clouds and cooled down to 45 degrees.

James Reilly led the Hawks in scoring a 40 in the nine-hole event. His 40 was the third best score of the 28 players. Owen Achenbach and Tyler Steiber were playing the Lancaster course for the first time with Owen carding a 60 and Tyler a 62. Khai Warrington added an 83 for a team total of 245.

Lancaster won the match with an impressive team score of 167. River Valley took second with a score of 178 followed by Platteville’s 186, Richland Center with a 187 and Dodgeville 205.

The Hawks returned to the Prairie du Chien Country Club on Thursday, April 21, playing  in the warmest weather to date but still dealt with heavy winds.

James Reilly had somewhat of an up and down round but still carded a 39, the second best score of the day. Owen Achenbach found his rhythm back at Prairie shooting a 46 for his best score in conference play to date. Tyler Steiber carded a 69 while improving on several aspects of his game. Khai Warrington struggled throughout the round with a 99 but stayed positive, identifying what he needs to work on the most.

Lancaster took their second win of the early SWC season with a team score of 190. Richland Center was close behind with a 192. Platteville had a 197, River Valley a 199, Dodgeville a 216 with the Hawks at 253.

Regardless of scores, the positive character of the Blackhawk players was demonstrated when they showed up on Saturday to help Country Club ladies clean up all the flower gardens throughout the golf course. Kudos to Mason Ihde, Tyler Steiber, Owen Achenbach, Quintin Scott, and James Reilly for their help.
