Cullen McShane is a District champion for the MFL MarMac boys track team. The senior broke his own shot put record at the Class 2A state qualifying meet in Osage Thursday night, and is now statebound.

McShane threw 50’6” to land in first place by 2.5 inches, over Waukon shot-putter Lincoln Snitker.

“Cullen is our lone state qualifier,” said boys’ coach Kyle Kirkestue, “keeping my streak of four consecutive state throwers alive.”

Once all of the 2A district meets concluded last week, McShane was seeded sixth heading into state this weekend at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

“Out of the 24 qualified, I think he has a high chance of getting a medal,” Kirkestue said. McShane will need eighth place or above to do so. “Hopefully he can break his record again and end his senior year on a high note. Then he’ll go on to South Dakota State for football this fall.”

Two weeks ago, McShane broke the school record, which had stood since 1965. This is his first year throwing shot.

McShane is MFL MarMac’s lone state qualifier this year. Coach Kirkestue felt junior Karter Decker could have qualified in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. However, having injured his hamstring at the Drake Relays a few weeks back, the coach and Decker made the decision Wednesday night that it was in his best interest to sit out of the District contest.

“I’m proud of him for making that decision. He has some big plans for his future, and we needed to look out for his health,” Kirkestue stated.

The 4x100 relay team of Wyatt Powell, Kaden Stocker, McShane and Decker was also pegged to possibly qualify for state. They ran a personal best race at Districts with a time of 44.92 and ended up third in the Osage district.

Kirkestue was proud of their effort but said, due to the state qualification process, even though the Bulldogs’ time was better than the other teams’ 4x100 times in other districts, only the top two teams from each district can move on.

Other team competitors Kirkestue pointed out for their performances Thursday were miler Jacob Schellhorn and Aiden Schoulte in the shot put. Schellhorn placed sixth and Schoulte eighth.

“I thought those were some pretty good achievements for freshmen,” the coach commented.

Sophomore runner Cody Moses agreed to compete in the two-mile race on what turned out to be one of the hottest, high-90s days of the season.

“I think that showed some incredible toughness out of him,” Kirkestue said.

Additionally, Izayah Streicher finished his season with a personal best in the 400 meters with a time of 56.6.

“I think that’s a pretty decent level for a sophomore,” the coach added.

According to the Iowa High School Athletic Association website, McShane’s state shot put event is slated for Thursday, May 19, at 4:30 p.m.
