In observance of May as National Historic Preservation Month, two individuals were recently recognized for their contributions to McGregor preservation efforts.

Mayor Lyle Troester, at the city council’s May 18 meeting, presented Mayor’s Century Awards to Michelle Pettit as well as the late Lucy Rodenberg Anderson.

Anderson’s award was in honor of her long-time role in preserving the written story of McGregor’s past.

“Certainly, Lucy loved McGregor and did a lot for it,” Troester said.

Pettit, the McGregor Library Director, was honored through her extensive research of the people and places of McGregor’s past.

“Michelle, you do so much, and it’s so appreciated. Your articles, what you look up and what you share, is amazing,” Troester stated.

Pettit said many in the room that night, and throughout McGregor, are invested in the community’s history.

“We’re so lucky that we have such an amazing story of the founding of this town and all the people who lived here. For the size of community we have, it’s quite astounding,” she reflected.

The two honorees were selected by the McGregor Historic Preservation Commission, which typically recognizes individuals annually. However, due to the pandemic, this is the first time in several years that awards have been bestowed.
