The MFL MarMac softball team kicked off its season last week, losing two tough games to New Hampton and Decorah.
The Bulldogs led 7-3 midway through the May 24 contest with the Chickasaws, but a four-run bottom of the fourth helped New Hampton tie it up. MFL MarMac took back the lead, 9-7, in the top half of the fifth inning, before allowing four more runs in the bottom of the frame that gave the Chickasaws an 11-9 win.
Despite picking up just four hits, the Bulldogs benefitted from 16 walks and three stolen bases. Leadoff hitter Ashley Shaw drew five walks alone, stole a base and scored three runs. Katelyn Gerndt singled and scored twice, while Savannah Schaller was 1-2 with three walks and a run scored. Lauren Haberichter singled, walked twice and drove in two runs.
The Chickasaw offense proved more productive, however, earning 10 hits, six walks and two hit by pitches off MFL MarMac’s pitcher, Haberichter. Of the 11 runs Haberichter allowed, just seven were earned. The senior struck out 11 batters.
After the Bulldogs’ May 25 game at Crestwood was rained out, the team finished up the week May 27, hosting Decorah for the home opener. MFL MarMac kept the Vikings close through half the game, but buckled later in the night, losing 22-2.
The Bulldogs will look to get into the win column this week, starting with a conference double header at Postville on June 1. They’ll head to Hudson on June 2, before playing in a tournament at North Fayette Valley June 3-4.
