Central softball fights through 1-4 week

The struggles for the Central softball team continued last week, as the Warriors went 1-4 and were held to one run or less three times. The team currently sits at seventh in the Upper Iowa Conference and has an overall record of 3-9.
The Warriors started the week off with a June 13 doubleheader against North Fayette Valley, losing game one 8-1. However, they rallied in game two to take a 14-9 victory.
Central had another doubleheader on June 16, versus Turkey Valley. The Warriors jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game one, but the Trojans tied the game in the fourth and then dropped five runs in the sixth on their way to a 7-1 victory.
Warrior pitching gave up nine hits while striking out four batters. Central’s offense, meanwhile, finished with four hits and 14 strikeouts.
In game two versus the Trojans, both offenses came alive, with Turkey Valley striking first for four runs in the top of the first inning. The Warriors then reeled off the next seven runs, taking the 7-4 lead heading into the fourth inning. The team surrendered eight runs in the fourth and fifth innings, however, and while they tallied five scores of their own in the bottom of the sixth, the Trojans continued to score as well, putting the game out of reach and taking a 16-12 win.
Central pitching gave up 17 hits and six walks, while striking out eight Trojans. On the other side, the Warrior offense combined for 12 hits and four walks, and limited their strikeouts to seven.
The final game of the week for the Warriors came June 17, in a 6-0 shutout against Maquoketa Valley.
Central’s offense couldn’t recreate the slugfest it had with the Trojans. Instead, the Warriors struck out seven times against the Wildcats and collected just two hits.
On the mound, the Warrior pitching staff allowed eight hits and one walk and struck out two Wildcats.
Official stats for the Warriors were not available for the games.
The Warriors have four games this week, starting with a doubleheader on June 20 at MFL MarMac. The team will then host Kee for a twin bill on June 22.
