The Clayton Ridge-Central baseball team endured another tough week, going 0-3 and extending their current losing streak to 12 games.

The War Eagles started the first game of a June 13 doubleheader at MFL Mar Mac well, with a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Unfortunately, it was short-lived, as the Bulldogs put up three runs in the second and added 11 more in the third, eventually winning 15-2.

CR-C hitters went to the plate 18 times, finishing with four hits and sevens strikeouts. Caleb Helle got one of those hits and the only recorded RBI for the War Eagles, while Kurt Ross, Drake Ostrander and Kahne Bolsinger collected the other three hits.

On the base paths, the War Eagles were aggressive, attempting six steals and coming away with five.

The defense struggled mightily, though, committing five errors and giving up 12 stolen bases to eight Bulldog players. The cumulative effect led to four unearned runs for MFL MarMac.

Attempting to hold the Bulldogs bats in check were Max Nuehring and Colton Hoeger, who gave up a combined seven hits, seven walks and 11 earned runs, while striking out six.

In the second game, the War Eagles again jumped ahead, this time leading 1-0 entering the second inning, but the Bulldogs responded with two runs in the second and three in the fifth, going on to win 5-1.

The CR-C offense actually hit better in game two, but failed to get runners across the plate despite finishing with five hits, two of which were doubles. The War Eagles also struck out just three times.

Ostrander, Ross, Caleb Helle, Bolsinger and Owen Ludovissy each picked up a hit.

The defense settled in a bit better in game two as well, committing just two errors and allowing six stolen bases, but these mistakes led to two extra runs for the Bulldogs.

On the mound, Caden Helle went a solid six innings, limiting the Bulldogs to four hits and three earned runs, while striking out four.

The final game of the week was June 14 versus South Winneshiek. The War Eagles trailed 3-0 early and were unable to string together enough hits to rally back, losing 7-2.

The CR-C offense actually outperformed the Warriors, getting more hits and finishing with a higher batting average, but the Warriors benefitted from seven walks, while the War Eagles had none.

Ostrander collected two hits, as did Bolsinger, while Meier, Caden Helle and Isaac Loan each had one. Loan also recorded the only RBI. The lack of walks and 10 strikeouts limited offensive production, however.

CR-C limited defensive mistakes against South Winn, committing only two errors while only giving up four stolen bases. The Warriors managed to score four unearned runs, though.

The seven walks allowed led not just to extra base runners, but extra pitches for the War Eagles staff of Ostrander and Caleb Helle, who combined to throw 144 pitches to 22 batters, which is over six pitches per hitter.

Helle, who pitched 4.2 innings, allowed four hits and three walks, gave up two earned runs and struck out seven. Ostrander pitched 2.1 innings, giving up four walks and an earned run. He fanned three Warriors.

The War Eagles will try to get back in the win column this week, starting with a June 20 doubleheader versus North Fayette Valley. The team will then hit the road June 21, to face Turkey Valley, before returning home June 23, for a match-up with Kee. The War Eagles will finish the week with the North Linn Tournament on June 25.
