Five War Eagle baseball players earn all-conference nods

Five members of the Clayton Ridge-Central baseball team have been given Upper Iowa all-conference honors. Drake Ostrander was selected to the first team and Caden Helle and Caleb Helle to the second team, while Kurt Ross and Kylar Millard earned honorable mention nods.


Ostrander started 20 games his senior season, leading the team in hits, with 19, and batting average, at .322. Of those hits, he recorded 13 singles, five doubles and one home run. Ostrander finished tied for second in runs, with 12, and was top-five in RBIs, with six. On the bases, he stole 12 of 13 attempts. 


As a pitcher, Ostrander appeared in seven games and started three of them. He totaled 22 and one-third innings, giving up 18 hits, 23 walks and 14 earned runs, while striking out 23 batters. Ostrander held opposing lineups to a .188 batting average and finished the season with a 4.39 ERA.


Caden Helle, a junior, started 25 games for the War Eagles and led the team with 11 RBIs on 13 hits, including six singles, five doubles, one triple and one home run. He stole 11 bases, scored 12 runs and finished with a .224 batting average. 


Helle also started four games on the mound, ending with a 1-0 record. He pitched 17 and two-thirds innings, allowing 14 hits, 15 walks and 12 earned runs. In addition to striking out 27 hitters, he held opposing lineups to a .184 average while maintaining a 4.75 ERA.


Senior Caleb Helle started 20 games for CR-C, leading the team in stolen bases, with 14, and finishing second in RBIs, at 10. His 16 hits were third most and he compiled a .276 batting average. Helle also scored seven runs. 


Helle pitched in five games for the War Eagles, for a total of 17 innings. He gave up 14 hits, 18 walks and 16 earned runs in that span, while striking out 23 and holding opponents to a .194 average.


Ross started 24 games, finishing second with 18 hits, including a team-high 15 singles. The junior was third in RBIs, with eight, and nine steals placed him fourth among War Eagle players. He ended the season with a .265 average.


Millard, also a junior, started 13 of 20 games and hit .237 on the year. He recorded nine hits and seven RBIs and scored seven runs. Millard also stole eight bases on 10 attempts and was just one of three War Eagle players who had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
