MFL MarMac girls fifth, boys sixth in cross country opener

The MFL MarMac girls cross country team placed fifth, and the boys sixth, at the season opening Ed-Co Invitational on Aug. 23. 

 

Freshman Cora Keehner led the lady Bulldogs with a time of 23:38.98, which was good for 15th. Junior Clare Grau was 27th at 25:13.61, followed by sophomore Evelyn Ruff in 32nd with a 25:58.02 finish. Fortieth place, with a time of 26:23.84, went to freshman Emma Koether, while junior Ayla Gerndt placed 51st at 27:13.42 and freshman Mariah Moser 65th at 28:23.64. Rounding out the scores were junior Kaylee Nuehring in 71st and senior Cadence Weber at 109th.

 

MFL MarMac’s combined score of 139 put the team behind just South Winneshiek (52), Beckman Catholic (59), Sumner-Fredericksburg (62) and Central (88). Out of 14 participating schools, 10 posted team scores.

 

On the boys side, Bulldog sophomore Jacob Schellhorn picked up right where he left off last season, crossing the finish line second overall with a time of 17:09.74. Charlie Sieck from Starmont/West Central claimed the top spot with a 16:54.95.

 

MFL MarMac also snagged another top-20 finish thanks to a 19:44.02 effort from senior Will Koether. Sawyer Keehner, a junior participating in his first cross country season, ran the course in 20:33.97 to place 34th, and sophomore Tucker Ruff was a close 37th with a time of 20:45.34. Sophomore Jaron Wille came in 79th at 22:57.12, while sophomore Logan Ross crossed 114th with a 28:08.40 time.

 

Waterloo West had five runners place in the top 10, and blew away the boys competition with a score of 33. Clayton Ridge was next best at 104, followed by Starmont/West Central at 124, South Winneshiek and Sumner-Fredericksburg both with 136 and MFL MarMac at 149. Of the 14 participating schools, 11 fielded full teams.

 

Both the MFL MarMac girls and boys teams will be back in action Thursday, Sept. 1, in a tough home meet at Tri City Golf Course in Luana. The girls race will begin at 5 p.m.
