The MFL MarMac volleyball team dropped to 0-3 last week, following two tough losses in a triangular at New Hampton on Aug. 30.

The Bulldogs lost 2-0 to the host school, with set scores of 25-6 and 25-11. The Chickasaws dominated at the net, taking 35 more kill attempts than MFL MarMac—and completing 21 of 43. They also served well, at 87.8 percent efficiency, and racked up 10 aces.

Brooke Gillitzer led the Bulldogs with two of the four team kills. Grace Anderson and Hailee Corlett each had one. Makayla Morrissey chipped in three assists.

MFL MarMac recorded zero blocks in the game, but had nine digs. Four came from Kadence Pape and three by Gillitzer.

From the service line, the Bulldogs completed 89.5 percent of attempts. Morrissey was a perfect 4-4, while Hannah Bogdonovich made four of five serves.

In the other match-up against Turkey Valley, MFL MarMac battled back from a 25-20 opening set loss to win the second 25-18. The Trojans snapped that momentum in set three, however, winning 15-12.

The Bulldogs were again out-gunned at the net, making 32 kill attempts to Turkey Valley’s 77. They finished with nine kills overall—including four from Anderson and two apiece by Gillitzer and Aliyah Thornton—while the Trojans earned 23. Morrissey was the team’s set leader, at six.

There was improvement at the net defensively, though, as the Bulldogs came away with nine total blocks and Turkey Valley tallied just two. Anderson was responsible for most of them, with three solo efforts and three assists. Gillitzer added one assist and Savannah Schaller two. Additionally, MFL MarMac dug 19 balls to the Trojans’ 36, including eight by Pape and five by Gillitzer. Mindy Keener finished the game with four.

Like New Hampton before them, Turkey Valley recorded 10 aces on MFL MarMac. The Bulldogs had one of their own, from Morrissey, and finished with 84.3 percent efficiency. Pape and Corlett were both a perfect 9-9 from the service line, and Morrissey was 9-10.

The Bulldogs have another triangular on tap Sept. 6, this time at Maquoketa Valley. They’ll take on the host school first, then West Central.
