The Central cross country team keeps encountering a “season of great weather” and taking advantage of it, with the latest example being the results of the Sept. 15 home meet at the Elkader Golf and Country Club.

The first sign that things are going in the right direction is the fact the Warrior girls finished second in the team standings despite competing without one of their top runners, Hannah Asche. In Asche’s absence, the team scored 70 points, behind just first place South Winneshiek with a score of 21.

Individually, Jaydin Dettman was Central’s top finisher, coming in second in a course best time of 21:26. Delaney Scherf finished 11th with a time of 23:01. Both runners were medalists.

Taylor Moser also continued to improve since returning to the team, finishing 18th, while Haley Frieden was 23rd and Eva Embretson crossed the line 25th. Two other runners finished the race in course best times, as Reese Berns placed 30th in 25:57 and Coral Rork was 31st at 26:10.

On the boys side, the Warriors finished sixth out of seven teams with a score of 135, but coach Martha Bauder was encouraged by the fact all seven runners had either a season best or second best time.

The team leader remained Gavin Holst, who finished in eighth place in 18:34 and was the only medalist. Teammate Collin Jaster ran to 22nd in 20:27, while Caden Fette finished 32nd and Vaughn Zittergruen 33rd. Both runners ran career and season best times.

The rest of the team included Tate Berns in 40th, Declan Finley in 41st and Michael White in 43rd.

The Warriors’ next meet is at the Waukon Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, Sept. 20.
