Lions Club members: Wanda Everson (Seneca), Carol Crusan, Pete Prew (Prairie du Chien, Rodney Boardmen (Seneca), and Ken Leinweber (Prairie du Chien) worked to collect enough plastic items to receive a bench. (Contributed photo).

The Prairie du Chien and Seneca Lions Clubs have joined together to work for an environmental project. The Lions have been collecting very specific kinds of plastic for several months. For turning in 500 lbs., they will be receiving a park bench from NexTrex. The company uses the plastic in the manufacturing of deck boards and is selective in the types of plastic they are able to use in the process.

It must be sort of stretchy, clean, dry, and free of paper. Bread wrappers, shopping bags, shrink wrap, bubble wrap, zip lock bags, water softener salt bags, and wrap from things like cases of water bottles, to name a few.

The Lions hope to work with more local companies to collect these materials. Some of the major contributors to the project have been: Premier Co-Op (Westby), Petco, (LaCrosse), and Aztec, (Prairie du Chien).

The process involves a great deal of hand work to sort the plastic and remove labels. The group believes that in the end it is well worth the effort to keep 500 lbs. of plastic out of landfills. Not all the people who helped in the process are pictured.

Anyone wanting to help keep plastic out of the landfills can contact Carol Crusan at 608-412-3184 for a list of acceptable plastics.
