Librarian

The Guttenberg Public Library is organizing an Open Mic program for writers on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. at the library.

A Writers Open Mic Program is a  support network for writers. It is a project for all writers, regardless of age, income or identity to feel welcomed and to share their work with others. This is an outlet of expression for writers that unites writers and anyone who enjoys listening, as well as to learn from one another. This project values literature and those who create. It values acceptance of all ages, income and experience levels.

Writing guidelines

Diversity is welcome and includes topics on love, social commentary, comic and personal pieces – any style and on any subject.

• Each participant will share their original writing. Writing must be submitted to Betty Pierce at bpierce112450@gmail.com on or before Sunday,  Oct. 30, prior to the event. Please include the length of time the reading is and one or two important sentences that the participant would like the audience to know most about themselves and their writing.

• Each participant will be given 4-5 minutes to share their work to an audience. The host will let the participant know when they’re on deck. When it’s their turn, the host will introduce them and read the brief sentences that were provided. At the 4-minute mark, the host will raise their hand as a signal. At 5 minutes, the host will begin a gentle clap.

• Submitted writings will be screened for content. The first part of the Writers Open Mic will be family friendly. If any content planning to be read is more adult in nature (e.g. topic, language, etc.), it will be placed later in the program.

• If the number of submitted writings exceed the program time, participants may be contacted letting them know they will not be presenting that day and will be encouraged to present at the next Writers Open Night Program.

• Doors open at 6:30 and the program starts promptly at 7:00.

• Respect the format and equipment. Listen to the open-mic host. Don't drop the mic. Ask for assistance if you need help adjusting the equipment.

• Please respect other writers and the host.

• No apologies when something doesn't go as planned. We all make mistakes. No judgment or negative comments about others and their writings or performance. We all are a work in progress and do our best in the moment. Good writers and people know and hear intentions and will ignore small things.

• Stick around and listen to others because you are likely to hear some very good work and might learn from someone else.

If you have any questions, please ask. We are so excited you have stepped up to share a piece of yourself!
