At the November 30 special meeting the Common Council unanimously passed the 2023 budget for the City of Prairie du Chien. This meeting was held, not only for the Council to discuss and vote on the budget, but also was an opportunity for the residents of PdC to pose questions at the public hearing. There was no public in attendance for the meeting.

Chad Abrams, City Administrator, had the following to say about the current budget planning process “The finance and department heads did a very good job. They did not raise any of their line items for 2022/2023.” According to Nate Gilberts, chair of the finance committee, “ The department heads are not spending more, everything is costing more, especially insurance.”

Part of the $6,303,743.37 budget was an slight increase in wages for members of the Council, Fire Department, Parks and Recreation employees, and election workers. All increases will go in effect January 1, 2023. Council members will see a $4 increase per year through the 2024 fiscal year bringing their salary to $208.08 per month. Over the same time period the mayor’s salary will increase by $17 per year, ($16.67 in 2023) bringing the mayor’s salary to $867 per month.

There was a 8.65% increase in the tax levy, down from the 14% increase in 2022. The total  amount of the 2023 levy is $11,339,337.80. This will only cause a slight increase in the total taxes paid on a home in PdC. On a $100,000 home taxes will increase from $2,536.67 (2021) to $2,589.47 (2022) and on a $150,000 home from $3,901.76 (2021) to $4,006.65 (2023). One of the reasons for the decreased is the reduction of Crawford County tax, from 24.96% (2021) to 23.43% (2022). There was also a slight decrease in the percentage given to Southwest Technical College.  “There was also an increase in the Lottery Credit”, stated Abrams. “ It was better than we budgeted for.” A more comprehensive breakdown of the tax structure can be seen in the accompanying photo or by requesting a Budget packet from City Hall.
