It was a busy week for the Central girls wrestling team, with two meets as the season winds down to regionals and state.

According to coach Colten Ledbetter, the team has “been wrestling very well. Everyone who has come to watch this season has been able to watch the girls progress each time they step on the mat.”

The Warriors’ first step this past week was at Anamosa, where the girls finished 0-3 in duals, 4-9 in matches and surrendered 18 losses due to forfeits.

In the dual against Anamosa, the team finished 1-4 in matches, with the lone win coming from Rebecca Suhr (155 pounds) via fall in 34 seconds. Reese Berns (115), Kimberly Suhr (130) and Mayleigh Medberry (135) all lost via fall, and Taylor Moser lost a close 15-13 decision at 125 pounds. The Warriors lost the dual 51-6.

Next up was Linn-Mar, against whom Central finished 1-3 in wrestling matches and gave up eight forfeits, giving Linn-Mar a 63-12 dual win. Berns was the only winner for the Warriors, with a fall at 115 pounds. K. Suhr and Medberry were pinned, and Moser fought hard in an 11-9 decision loss.

In the final dual of the meet, the Warriors lost to Solon 42-18, after going 2-2 in matches and giving away five forfeits. R. Suhr and Berns took home fall wins, while K. Suhr and Medberry both lost by pin.

The following meet saw the Warriors back in front of the home crowd for senior night, and though they battled hard, going 3-3 in matches, they were defeated in both duals.

Against Postville, Central won the only wrestling match, but lost the forfeit battle, giving Postville a slim 36-33 dual victory. Berns won the only match that took place via 9-5 decision.

In the following dual, the Warriors took on South Winneshiek, going 2-3 in matches and losing 42-12. Berns and R. Suhr won their matches via fall, while Moser, K. Suhr and Maci Keppler were pinned.

The girls season continues this week with two meets, starting at Sumner-Fredericksburg on Jan. 17, followed by East Buchanan on Jan. 20.
