Commander (Ret) David Scott, 85 of McGregor, passed away on Friday, Jan. 13, 2023. He was a great man with an even bigger soul.

His first love of 63 years was his wife, Carolyn, followed by his love of flying. He spent 22 years flying military helicopters, six years in the Army and 16 years in the Coast Guard. He received numerous awards and commendations including a Purple Heart, three Distinguished Flying Cross and over 15 Air Medals.

David had a dry sense of humor, but, as you got to know him, he would talk about his career. David loved listening to New Orleans jazz, wood working, carving, riding his recumbent tricycle, tasting all his different scotch and bourbons and being with friends.

David is survived by his wife Carolyn; three children, Joan Sokol, Deborah and Matthew; two grandchildren, Jeremy (Victoria) Sokol, Adam (Amanda) Sokol; five great-grandchildren, Jacob, Adelaide, Baine, Henry and Addison; and his two brothers, Herbert (Sybil) Scott and Fred (Susan) Scott.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Hazel (Wilson) Scott, and son-in-law William “Billy” Sokol.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, at First Congregational Church, 429 Main St., in McGregor, where you may visit with the family from 9 a.m. until time of service.

Inurnment will take place directly after the service at Pleasant Grove Cemetery with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite local charity.

Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of McGregor is assisting the family with services.
