Upper Iowa all-conference selections include five Central players

The Central girls basketball team is well represented on this year’s Upper Iowa all-conference teams. Seniors Delaney Scherf and Haley Frieden and junior Ashlyn Scherf were named to the first team, while senior Hannah Asche and junior Grace Kuehl were honorable mention selections.

 

D. Scherf started all 22 games for the Warriors and led the team in several statistical categories. That included shooting percentage with 50.2 percent, free throw shooting percentage of 78.8 percent, shots made with 148 and points scored with 316. Her 46.2 percent shooting on three pointers was the highest among the starters, and Scherf surpassed 1,000 career points during the season, in which she helped lead Central to the first conference championship in 47 years. She was also at the top with 72 assists and 76 steals, and had 112 rebounds and 12 blocks, ranking second on the team. 

 

Frieden started all 22 games and finished near the top in several statistical categories. Her 73 shots made and 219 points were third most on the team, and her 33.5 shooting percentage and 58.7 free throw shooting percentage were also third highest among starters. She shot 32.2 percent from long range. Frieden led the team with 117 rebounds and tied for the team lead with 72 defensive rebounds. She finished second in assists with 62, third in steals with 51 and also had 21 blocks.

 

A. Scherf had a breakout year in which she started eight of 22 games and scored 241 points, which put her second on the team and was over 100 more than her previous season, when she received all-conference honorable mention. She was second in three-point percentage of qualifying players, at 37.8 percent, while shooting 43.2 percent from the field. A. Scherf also had 80 rebounds, 51 steals, 40 assists and six blocks, placing her in the top five in each category.

 

Asche started 16 games, scoring 95 points while shooting 31.6 percent from the field, 25.8 percent on three pointers and 63.3 percent on free throws. Her stat line also included 28 rebounds, 26 steals and 23 assists.

 

Kuehl started 20 of 22 games and finished top five on the team in numerous stats. She made 83 field goals and shot 38.3 percent from the floor, 24 percent from behind the arc and 53.9 percent from the free throw line, contributing to her 122 total points. That amount was fourth most among Central players. Additionally, Kuehl tallied 66 rebounds, 55 steals, 38 assists and 5 blocks.
