The McGregor City Council, at its March 15 regular meeting, approved steps that will move two community projects forward.

That included approval of a quote from Davy Engineering, at a cost of $50,000, for design engineering of the brick streets around Triangle Park.

According to mayor Lyle Troester, the project would consist of updating and replacing bricks—digging them out, putting in a base and reinserting the bricks.

“We’ll probably have some saved from the Main Street project to replace the broken ones,” Troester said.

The preliminary project cost is $702,650. Work likely wouldn’t take place for at least a couple years.

“We’re just looking at the design engineering so we can apply for some grant funding,” said city administrator Lynette McManus.

Although on the city’s wish list, as Troester called it, the project is becoming more necessary, noted deputy city clerk and economic development lead Brandi Crozier.

“The brick streets are getting pretty rough. We need to start this process now,” she said.

“The bricks are getting wavy, where they wash out, and they’re chipped up. Definitely becoming trip hazards,” agreed McManus.

At last week’s meeting, the council also approved a request by the park board to submit an Upper Mississippi Gaming Corporation pre-application for the Turner Park restroom building.

The McGregor Achievement Club submitted an application last year, but it was not successful. The park board is making the same proposal, but with two stalls in each restroom instead of one.

“That would add about $25,000 to the original, which is $139,000 approximately,” stated McManus. “The Achievement Club has about $20,000 and we’ve got $14,000 saved. The city had committed around $30,000 to the Achievement Club’s grant last year. We have some funds in the park and recreation capital project fund.”
