“Set a goal and have a purpose with every shot” is a constant refrain from Central assistant golf coach Tony Smith. With a team made up of several first-time golfers still learning the sport, the Warriors have impressed head coach Ryan Burke. Even if the losses outnumber the wins, the golfers are growing.

“Watching them learn the sport has been amazing. Their drive to do better not only as a golfer but as a person has shown tremendously. They are setting personal goals and figuring out how to meet those goals each meet we go to,” Burke said.

The Warriors spent last week chasing those goals with two matches, the first on the home course at Elkader Golf and Country Club versus MFL MarMac. In the boys match, the Warriors were defeated by the Bulldogs, who scored 159 compared to Central’s 215.

Isaac Wellendorf put together a round of 47 to finish seventh, while Brock Eglseder finished with a 51 and placed eighth. Marcus Evans ended the day with a 58, which was good for ninth, and Keaton Klingman shot a 59 to come in 10th. The rest of the team included Isaac Loan, who shot a 60 to come in 11th, Jake Hertrampf with a 67 in 13th place and Max Fettkether with a 66, putting him into 12th place.

The Warrior girls collectively shot a 248, while MFL MarMac put up a 236 to take the win. The top golfer for Central was Haley Frieden, who shot a 52 and finished in second place. Teammate Makayla Erickson put up a 60 for the round and finished fourth, while Tessa Sylvester shot her way to a 64 and placed sixth. Completing the meet in ninth place was Caitlyn Druecker, who shot a 72, followed by Jillian Finley with a 74 for 10th. In 11th place was Macie Winters with a 79.

“We’ve really been doing a lot of practice around the green. Some of our highs throughout the past couple meets have been putting and chipping. Our golfers have started to show ‘touch’ and they are doing great at chipping it close and making their putts, which has really started to reflect in their scores,” Burke said.

The Warriors were back in action April 28 against West Central, but the nine-hole par of 36 at the Elkader Golf Course proved a formidable number for both boys’ squads. In the end, West Central pulled out a close victory, shooting a team total 198, while the Warriors shot a 204.

Leading the way for the Warriors was Eglseder, who shot a 48 to finish in third place. Loan put up a 49 to finish fourth, followed by Wellendorf’s 52, which was good for sixth. Evans carded a 55, which put him into seventh. Next on the leader board was Max Fettkether, who shot a nine-hole round of 59 to finish 10th, while Klingman turned in a 60 for 11th and Jake Fettkether was 12th after shooting a 65. Maxwell Schantz was 14th and Hertrampf finished 15th.

The girls fared better, as they took down the Blue Devils 228-254. On top of that, Central took the top two sports, with Erickson finishing first after shooting a 53, and Sylvester earning a 54 to come in second. Two more Warriors placed inside the top five, including Frieden, who shot a final round 56 for fifth place, and Finley, who swung her way into fifth with a 65. Druecker put up a 69, putting her ninth, and Winters was 11th with a score of 88.

“We’ve had some great golf meets this year and all the golfers continue to grow and get mentally smarter each round. A lot of kids are learning to hit smarter shots rather than longer shots, and it’s been paying off. We’re starting to see personal low scores, which then comes team low scores,” Burke said.

The Warriors have two more matches this week, starting May 1 at the Guttenberg Golf Course to take on Clayton Ridge. They will then have a home match versus South Winneshiek.
