Michael J. Atkinson (Mike), age 62 of Wauzeka, Wisc. passed away Sunday, April 30, 2023, at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Prairie du Chien on April 4, 1961, the son of LaVern and Virginia (Bomkamp) Atkinson. Mike graduated from Wauzeka High School in 1979. He then attended Southwest Technical College where he obtained two associate degrees. Mike married Janice Kreher on November 27, 1982, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wauzeka. Mike & Janice were blessed with two daughters, Kristy, and Linda.

He worked side by side with his stepfather at Thor’s Appliance for many years. He’s always been a cowboy at heart wearing cowboy boots with his hunting dog by his side and watching westerns. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Wauzeka Rod & Gun Club. Mike was a man of few words, but he loved making people laugh with his quick-witted remarks. He especially enjoyed playing jokes on Janice and the girls. His greatest enjoyment in life was his family – his wife, children, and grandchildren. Mike and Janice had many great adventures; especially his first airplane ride to Key West, a cruise to Alaska, touring the John Wayne Birthplace Museum, catching shows in Branson, visiting Linda and her family in Texas, and spending his 60th birthday at the Alamo. His grandkids loved riding on the front of his scooter and honking the horn; a highlight for both Mike and the kiddos. He also enjoyed spending time around home in Wauzeka; particularly his regular visits from Kristy to work on projects together and watching Packer games with Janice.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years Janice; their two daughters Kristy (Bonnie) Nuttkinson and Linda (Andrew) Atkinson-Pettee; his two brothers LaVern (Betty) and Don (Joan) Atkinson and two sisters Deb (Gary) Stuckey and Sarah (Mark Kudlacik) Bendickson; his grandchildren O’Neil and Raegan Pettee; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, Thor Romanek, and brothers-in-law, Jerry Kreher and Dale Bendickson.

A Celebration of Mike’s Life will be Friday, May 12, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. at Century Hall, Pastor Kevin Baker officiating with inurnment in the Wauzeka Cemetery both in Wauzeka. Friends may call at Century Hall on Friday from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family. www.garrityfuneralhome.com
