The MFL MarMac volleyball team picked up its first victory of the season Sept. 5, in a triangular at Maquoketa Valley.

The Bulldogs defeated West Central 2-1, rebounding from a 25-17 opening set loss to claim a 25-22 edge in the second frame and 16-13 advantage in the third.

MFL MarMac was finally able to show what it could do at the net with a season-high 21 kills. Ella Corlett led the way with six and Hannah Bogdonovich four. Mallory Lang and Lily Johnson each racked up three, and Maddie Keehner and Avery Lamborn had two apiece.

Lang and Makayla Morrissey combined for 16 of the team’s 18 assists, while Lauryn Johnson earned the other two.

Corlett was responsible for the Bulldogs’ lone block, and Lauryn Johnson collected a team-high 11 digs. Bogdonovich followed with five digs, and Kaitlin Picha and Mindy Keehner each snagged four.

The Bulldogs completed 84.5 percent of their serves, including 12-13 efforts by both Lauryn Johnson and Lang. Johnson earned four of the team’s 11 aces and Lang two. Another top performance came from Morrissey, who made all but one of her 11 serves—three of which were aces.

MFL MarMac’s other match-up that night, against host Maquoketa Valley, did not go as well. The Wildcats took the opening set 25-16, then the second 25-12, for a 2-0 sweep.

The Bulldogs were limited to 12 kills on 50 attempts in this game, while Maq Valley turned in 20 on 51 tries. Maddie Keehner led MFL MarMac with four kills, followed by Corlett and Bogdonovich with three apiece. Morrissey and Lang matched one another with six assists.

The defense recorded no blocks, but earned 18 digs. Lauryn Johnson accounted for five, Picha and Bogdonovich three and Keehner two.

Serving was also more of a struggle, as the Bulldogs dropped below 80 percent completion. Keagan Echard was a perfect 4-4, while Corlett and Bogdonovich hit four of five. Corlett had an ace.

The 1-4 Bulldogs start conference play this week, hosting Central in the Sept. 12 home opener. They’ll play in a tournament at Waukon on Sept. 16.
