Learning, social opportunities at library’s toddler story and play time

Murphy Helwig Library in Monona began offering a weekly toddler story and play time earlier this summer. The programs, now held Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m., include several stories and free play with STEM-related materials. (Submitted photo)

Monona area families have found learning and social opportunities at Murphy Helwig Library’s weekly toddler story and play time.
The program started earlier this summer on Thursday mornings, as an addition to the library’s regular story times and, at that time, the summer reading program.
Murphy Helwig Library Assistant Susan Trappe said staff weren’t sure how many people to expect.
“That first day, we had 75,” she said. “We’ve fluctuated from 75 to 60 to 40. It’s been very popular.”
So popular the library began offering an extra day, welcoming families on both Wednesday and Thursday at 10 a.m.
“We also noticed, too, that some kids were a little hesitant when there were so many people here. We decided to start an extra day on Wednesday mornings so that way it will space people out a bit,” Trappe said. “We’ve had some people come both days, which is totally great. It gives everybody a chance to mingle.”
Each toddler story and play time lasts around an hour. Trappe typically reads three books—often newer releases.
“I don’t usually have a theme. It’s ones that grab my attention and are cute and fun,” she said.
After the stories, toddlers enjoy free play. The library has Duplo blocks, large Lego bricks, as well as Mr. Potato Heads, Magna Tiles, K’nex and gears so kids can build things and make them move.
“We try and switch it up a bit on what toys are out each week,” Trappe said.
Murphy Helwig Library received a grant awhile back to purchase STEM materials like this, and more are on the way to do special programs, according to Trappe.
“There are different STEM toys people don’t have at home or have access to. It helps kids with mobility skills and color matching and uses a different part of the brain,” she shared.
Although the program is geared toward toddlers, older kids are welcome too. The back of the library has bigger things for older kids to play with, Trappe noted.
In addition to learning, toddler story and play time has become a fun social time for families. Parents have enjoyed getting together, and it’s allowed kids to meet new friends.
“Some kids aren’t in a daycare or a setting like that where they can interact with other children,” Trappe said.
It’s just one example, she added, of why the library isn’t just reading books. “We get to learn and grow and try different things.”
Murphy Helwig Library has offerings for all ages. Along with books (in print, audio and electronic form), DVDs, magazines and local newspapers are available. New books and materials are put out regularly. They also have inter-library loan capabilities.
“If we don’t have something, we can find a library that has it and get books that way,” Trappe said.
Computers are available for those who don’t have one at home, and people can utilize Wi-Fi and printing services. Staff are happy to answer questions about technology and devices.
Murphy Helwig Library has a more private study room space as well as a meeting room accessible during and after hours. The building served as a cooling center during hot days this summer, and also has public bathrooms. A new pergola in the backyard with some benches makes for a quiet, relaxing spot to read.
Notary service is available, and monthly “Coffee House” programs introduce patrons to people and services available in the community.
“We cover all sorts of topics,” said Trappe.
