Francis John Whittle, 78, of rural Elkader, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, at Mayo Hospital, Rochester, Minn. Francis was born March 31, 1945, at home, on the Nieman farm, to Ambrose and Margaret (Holtz) Whittle. He attended country school for 3.5 years, St. Joseph’s Catholic School until 1958 and graduated from the Elkader Public School in 1962. In 1969, he finished four years at Upper Iowa College, Fayette. Francis served in the Army from Jan. 20, 1970, and was honorably discharged Sept. 24, 1971.

 

Francis was united in marriage to Susan Stence on June 7, 1969. Two children were born to this union. They made their home on a farm near Elkader. Francis also worked at Cabela’s for 11 years. He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church his entire life. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He loved wide open spaces, taking care of and being on the farm, playing cards, reading, eating Susan’s pies and over the years dancing and fishing.

 

He is survived by his wife Susan; two children, Marie (Kamal Egodage) of Whitehouse Station, N.J. and John (Katie) of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; grandchildren, Carter and Kaylee Kline and Avery Marie; his brothers, Greg (Emily) of Altoona and Lowell (special friend, Peggy) of Green Bay, Wis.; sisters, Helen Mueller, Rochester, Minn., and Marian (Dick) Brockman, Topeka, Kansas; brothers and sisters-in law, Dick and Donna Stence, Dubuque and Ruth and Dick Streicher, Farmersburg; and many nieces and nephews.

 

Francis was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, Marvin and Sandy and Walter and Sally; sisters and brothers-in-law, Loretta and Jerry Garbina, Irene and Joe Evans and Art Mueller; nieces and nephews, Ann Evans, Justin White, Daniel Evans and Griffin Hauser; in-laws, John and Alice Stence; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jack and Bev Stence; and nephew, Dominic Streicher.

 

Visitation was Nov. 17, and one hour before Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader. Mass of Christian Burial was Nov. 18, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader, with Rev. John Haugen officiating.

 

Interment with military honors was at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Elkader.

 

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elkader is assisting the family.
