River Ridge boys improve to 2-1 with win at Southwestern

With a 64-51 non-conference victory over host Southwestern last Thursday night, coach Jim Wagner and his River Ridge boys basketball team improved to 2-1 early in the season.

The Timberwolves held a halftime advantage of 32-15 after a sensational first half, but were then outscored 36-32 in the second half, hanging on for a 13-point victory.

“We played well in the first half on defense, and got in some foul trouble in the second half,” explained River Ridge coach Jim Wagner. “I felt we settled and didn’t attack as well in the second half.”

The Timberwolves did mange to get off 18 more shot attempts than their opponent, making 32-of-67 (48%) from the field, including 7-of-17 (41%) from 3-point range.

The Wildcats were 16-of-49 (33%) from the field, including 2-of-20 (10%) from long range, which was a testament to how good the River Ridge defense was playing

There was quite a disparity at the free throw line, where Southwestern made 17-of-29 (59%) attempts, compared to 6-of-9 (66.7%) for the Timberwolves.

River Ridge was led by sophomore guard Brandon Davis, who netted 13 points to go along with 11 rebounds and seven assists.

Junior sharp shooter Carter Copsey added 11 points, going a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown, while senior Matthew Nies finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

Following this past Tuesday night’s home game against visiting Potosi, the Timberwolves travel to Highland Thursday night, then will host Wauzeka-Steuben on Monday, Dec. 11.
