Ruth A. Mergen, age 84, formerly of Bloomington, WI, passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien. She was born Nov. 6, 1939, in Glen Haven, WI; the daughter of Albert and Rosella Kirschbaum. She married Tom Mergen on April 16, 1958.

Ruth was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandma. She was an avid reader, daily wine drinker, and the best cookie maker! Ruth enjoyed shopping, traveling, celebrating holidays, and playing cards with the same group of women for 50 plus years. 

Ruth is survived by her four children: Bruce (Shirley) Mergen of Birmingham, AL, Alan (Dawn) Mergen of Bloomington, WI, Kim Martin of Prairie du Chien, WI, Amy (Craig) Montgomery of Sun Prairie, WI; daughter-in-law, Ruth Mergen of Boomer, NC; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Bernadine Kirschbaum of Lancaster, WI, and Mary (Gene) Murphy of Madison, WI; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Mergen; son, Brent Mergen; son-in-law Kevin Martin; parents, Albert and Rosella Kirschbaum; two brothers, Donald and Robert Kirschbaum; and special friend, Dayle Meyer. 

A Memorial Mass was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 22, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father Steve Brunner officiating. A visitation was held from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 21, at the church and again on Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass. Larson Funeral Home in Fennimore is assisting the family.
