The railroad crossing by the Marquette-Joliet bridge on First Street/Highway 76 in Marquette was blocked for nearly seven hours on Sunday, April 27, after multiple cars derailed.
According to Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), rail cars were being moved at low speed into the rail yard at Marquette when the incident happened around 7 a.m. CPKC did not state what caused the derailment, but that there were no injuries and all five involved cars remained upright.
The cars were not carrying hazardous materials and presented no danger to the public, noted the Mar-Mac Police Department in a Facebook post.
Due to the blockage, there was no through traffic allowed on Highway 76 between Marquette and McGregor. Motorists traveling to and from McGregor, as well as Casino Queen Marquette and Marquette’s Bench neighborhood, were detoured via Highway 18.
CPKC said all the cars were rerailed and moved from the area early Sunday afternoon. The Mar-Mac Police reported the road reopened by 1:50 p.m., although railroad crews remained in the area conducting track repairs.
The April 27 event was the first notable derailment in Marquette since Aug. 23, 2018, when three sand cars derailed near the crossing under the bridge, between First and Water streets, trapping around 40 people on the riverfront for at least four hours.
