Lockmasters House Heritage Museum opens for the season May 22
The Guttenberg Heritage Society is pleased to announce the season opening of the Lockmasters House Heritage Museum will take place on Thursday, May 22.
Located on the grounds of Lock and Dam #10 in Guttenberg, this historic museum offers visitors a unique glimpse into the rich history of the Mississippi River and the lock and dam system.
The Lockmasters House Heritage Museum will be open to the public from May 22 through mid-October, operating Thursdays through Saturdays from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free, though donations are appreciated to support the ongoing preservation efforts.
The Lockmasters House, constructed between 1937 and 1938, is the last remaining lockmaster residence in its original location on the Upper Mississippi River. It stands as a testament to the cultural heritage of the 1930s and the significance of the lock and dam system. The museum showcases the history of Lock and Dam #10, as well as the broader history of Guttenberg and its connection to the river.
Visitors can explore exhibits featuring vintage furniture, appliances, photographs, and textiles that depict life during the era when the lockmasters and their families resided in the house. The museum also offers insights into the construction and operation of the lock and dam system, highlighting its impact on the region’s development.
