The MFL MarMac softball team concluded its season last week, falling to Cascade after an opening round playoff victory over Postville.
The Bulldogs were leading 1-0 in the July 7 game in Monona when a two-run third inning gave the Pirates a 2-1 advantage. MFL MarMac tied the score 2-2 later that inning, but Postville responded again for a 3-2 lead. The Bulldogs got a little more breathing room with a three-run bottom of the fourth, to go up 5-3, and the teams made it through the fifth inning with the score unchanged. Although the Pirates cut the deficit to 5-4 in the top of the sixth, MFL MarMac held on for the win.
MFL MarMac out-hit the Pirates 10-6 and drew six walks compared to Postville’s five. Emme Wikner had three of the hits—a single, double and triple—and drove in two runs. She stole a base and scored twice as well. Khloe Schutte was 2-3 with a walk, stole two bases and knocked in a run. Garnett Niedziejko finished the game with one hit, a sacrifice and an RBI, while Kacie Picha was on base three times thanks to a single, walk and hit by pitch. She had an RBI and two runs scored.
Hailey Bouzek secured the win, allowing nine hits, three walks and four earned runs in six innings on the mound. She struck out four Pirates. Gracyn Welch walked two batters and hit another in the final frame, while also picking up a strikeout.
The Bulldogs were kept off the board in an 8-0 loss at Cascade on July 9. The Cougars racked up five runs the opening inning, then tacked on two more in the third and one run in the fifth. They benefitted from seven hits, a walk and three hit batters, and also swiped five bases.
Cascade’s Kate Green pitched an impressive five innings, holding MFL MarMac to two hits while striking out 11 batters. Wikner doubled and Autumn Shaw singled for the Bulldogs.
MFL MarMac finished the season with an 8-26 record overall. The team was 5-11 in the Upper Iowa Conference.
