A seventh-inning rally wasn’t enough to lift the Clayton Ridge-Central baseball team over Waukon in the July 7 Class 2A - Substate 4 postseason opener.
The Indians netted one run the first inning, then continued to tack on throughout the game, with two runs in the third inning and one each in the fourth, fifth and sixth. The WarEagles were held off the board through the first six innings, then clawed to within two runs with a four-run bottom of the seventh. Waukon stemmed the rally, however, to win 6-4.
Kahne Bolsinger collected three of the WarEagles’ seven hits, with a pair of singles and a double. Mason Loan singled and was hit by a pitch, then later scored a run. Carson Ruegnitz singled, walked, stole a base and scored a run. Colton Hoeger had one RBI on one hit. He stole a base and crossed home plate once himself.
The Indians tagged WarEagle pitchers with eight hits and walked five times. Max Nuehring was on the mound for four and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits, five walks, a hit batter and five earned runs. He struck out five batters. Jack Scherf gave up three hits and one earned run, in addition to striking out two hitters, in two and one-third innings.
Clayton Ridge-Central finished the season 9-17 overall and 9-9 in the Upper Iowa Conference standings. Bolsinger and Nuehring were both first team all-conference selections, while Mason Loan was second team and Seth Kregel and Ruegnitz honorable mention. More information on those honors will be included in next week’s edition.
