After their opening game of the week against Kee was postponed due to weather, the Central girls basketball team picked up wins over West Central and LeRoy-Ostrander to improve to 4-2 on the season.

The Blue Devils were no match for the Warriors, who out-scored them 26-3 in the opening half of the Dec. 12 game in Elkader. Central continued to put up points in the third and fourth quarters, while holding West Central to six or fewer points in each frame, for a 58-12 victory.

The Warriors shot 34.3 percent from the field, led by a 16-point effort from Katie Royer. The senior also snagged nine of the team’s 28 steals and contributed four assists, three rebounds and a block.

With 15 points, junior Brylee Erickson was one of three Central players in double digits, and her stat line included two steals and two rebounds. Senior Oakley Armstrong knocked down 10 points—six of which came from behind the arc—to go with six steals, four rebounds, three assists and a block. Sophomores Mya Gregerson and Natalya Singleton netted a respective six and four points off the bench. Singleton was also one of the team rebounding leaders, her six trailing only the seven grabbed by senior Layla Embretson.

The Warriors continued to roll on Dec. 13, defeating LeRoy-Ostrander 49-39 at the Border Battle in Decorah. This was another game of early advantages for Central, who led 10-5 after the first quarter and 21-15 by halftime. The Cardinals kept it close early in the second half, even taking a brief lead at the start of the fourth quarter, before the Warriors found some late breathing room.

Central has a pair of Upper Iowa Conference games on the schedule this week: at MFL MarMac on Dec. 16 and home versus North Fayette Valley on Dec. 19.
