The MFL MarMac girls wrestling team had a successful week of competition at the Central Girls Invitational and MFL MarMac Girls Scramble.
After accumulating 90 points, the Bulldogs finished sixth among 17 teams at the Central Girls Invite on Dec. 16. Seven wrestlers placed at the tournament, led by another title for Kennedy Bachman at 100 pounds. The junior secured a fall in under a minute to advance to the championship match, where she scored a 13-5 major decision over Alburnett’s Josie McGraw.
MFL MarMac freshman Aaliyah Corcoran was the runner-up at 105 pounds. She pinned her way to the first-place match, before losing by fall to Brielle Starkweather from North Fayette Valley.
At 130 pounds, Charlotte Koether breezed through her first two matches, but a pin at the hands of Alburnett’s Juliana Burds bumped her to the back side of the bracket. Koether rebounded with a fall to reach the third-place match, where she picked up another fall over Berkley Lynch from West Delaware.
April Upton also finished third for the Bulldogs. Despite losing her first two 190-pound bouts, Upton wrapped the tournament on a high note with a fall over Melissa Hampton of Nashua-Plainfield.
Bayleigh Wood took fourth place at 145 pounds. She edged West Delaware’s Carleigh Lux to open the tournament, before suffering a fall in her second match. Wood then picked up a major decision to advance to the third-place match, where she lost by fall to Kiana Hilsenbeck of Sumner-Fredericksburg.
Isla Henkes dropped her opening two matches at 170 pounds, but finished strong, pinning Hailey Wilkens from Nashua-Plainfield to place seventh.
Veda Torkelson went 0-3 in her matches that night, placing eighth in the 120-pound bracket. Alydia Abel lost two matches and did not place at 135.
On Dec. 19, MFL MarMac hosted its annual scramble. Bachman (100 pounds) won all three of her matches and several wrestlers—Corcoran (105), Upton (190), Koether (130) and Hannah Jacobson (170)—went 1-1. Henkes (170), Abel (135) and Torkelson (120) were 0-2 in their matches and Wood finished 0-3.
The Bulldogs will be off the next two weeks for winter break and will return to action Jan. 6 for Upper Iowa Conference duals.
