MFL MarMac wrestlers Will Howes and Tacoma Thompson were both runners-up at the Regal Wrestling Invitational hosted by Iowa City Regina on Dec. 20.
Howes collected two falls en route to the heavyweight title bout, where he suffered a rare loss to Owen Menke of Sigourney-Keota by 7-1 decision.
Similar to Howes, Thompson also won his first two matches at 126 pounds by fall. In the championship match, he was pinned by Lisbon’s Cade Happel.
Gavin Kishman placed fourth for the Bulldogs at 144 pounds. He opened the tournament with a pair of falls, before a pin at the hands of Cash Hatfield from West Branch bumped him to the third-place match. There, Ryker Van den Huevel of Sigourney-Keota took him down by major decision.
Maddox Hanson finished the day fifth at 132 pounds, while Tristan Hoopes was seventh at 215. Parker Muras (120), Anthony Bunting (150) and Draven Stuckman (157) all placed eighth at their respective weights.
The tournament followed up a pair of dual losses for MFL MarMac on Dec. 18. The Bulldogs lost the opener to Lisbon 59-9, their lone points coming in a fall for Howes and 6-3 decision for Kishman. Thompson, Hanson, Bunting, Stuckman and Hoopes were all pinned by their opponents, and Muras lost by technical fall. The Lions also benefited from four MFL MarMac forfeits.
In the second dual, Beckman Catholic came out on top 53-24. Howes earned another fall, while Thompson and Kishman also secured pins and Muras won by forfeit.
Stuckman, Hoopes and Christian Escobar (157) all lost by fall, and Hanson was on the wrong end of a tech fall. The Blazers picked up another 24 points via forfeit.
MFL MarMac will now be off for two weeks for winter break, returning to action Jan. 6 for UIC duals.
