Sheriff's office receives honor


John Hauschild with the National Child Safety Council recently presented Clayton County Sheriff Mike Tschirgi and his department with an award honoring 35 years of child safety and drug education.

The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office was recognized for 35 years of appreciation from the National Child Safety Council.  The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office will once again be providing child safety and drug education materials for all children, preschool and older, as well as their parents.

Kenneth F. Schmitz

Kenneth F. Schmitz, 83, of Arkadelphia, Arkansas and formerly of Ossian, IA died Thursday, January 23, 2020, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Kenneth Frank Joseph Schmitz was born on Saturday, November 21, 1936, in Decorah, Winneshiek County, IA the son of Philip Allen and Florence Antionette (Miller) Schmitz. He graduated from St. Francis de Sales Catholic High School in the class of 1954. Ken was united in marriage to Helen Jane Donlon on January 12, 1957 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader, IA. They made their home in Ossian where Ken had joined his father, Philip, in the family business at Schmitz Furniture, Floorcovering and Funeral Home in 1956.

Jean Boehm McBride, 89, of California, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 18, 2020, at Moniteau Care Center. She was born on July 24, 1930 in Edgewood, Iowa, a daughter of Harvey and Sarah Jane (Noggle) Boehm. She was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Elkport, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Elvis Lowell “Harvey” McBride, April 21, 1951, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Washington, D.C.

Janice Arlene Hoth Eno

Janice Arlene Hoth Eno, 86, of St. Olaf, Iowa died, Tuesday, January 14, 2020, at Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg, Iowa. Janice was born June 7, 1933 to Lyle and Adella Olson. She attended Dry Creek Country School through the 8th grade and graduated from Elkader High School.

Janice was united in marriage with Eugene Carl Hoth on December 1, 1953, at Norway Lutheran Church. Five children were born to this union. Following the death of Eugene on April 22, 1966, Janice continued to farm and raise the children. She was united in marriage with James Lewis Eno on May 21, 1976, in Burlington, Iowa. Janice enjoyed collecting dolls, gardening, crafting, crocheting, embroidery and loved spending time with family and friends.

Leslie Rudolph Tappan (Doc)

Leslie Rudolph Tappan (Doc), age 98½, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2020, in Appleton, WI with his daughter and son-in-law by his side. He had lived a full and blessed life, and was ready to return to his Maker.

Leslie was born on July 26, 1921, to Ira De Brueler Leslie Tappan and Emma Matilda Ulfers Tappan. He was their only child, and he grew up during the Great Depression. Even though those years presented some struggles, he felt much love and security from his parents and extended family.

Central wrestlers bring home trophy


The Central Little Warriors took home top honors in the recent Little Vikes wrestling tournament held at Ed-Co High School. Six teams participated in the event. The team had 20 athletes competing in the January 12 invitational at Clayton Ridge. They placed third in that event.

Longtime freelance writer Pat McTaggart has died.

Longtime Register freelance writer Pat McTaggart has died. The cause of death has not yet been released pending an autopsy. It is believed he died at his home Sunday, January 19.

  McTaggart, who was 70, had worked for the Register for several decades, most recently as a sports writer. He was a freelance writer for a number of other newspapers and magazines, as well. He has a keen interest in World War II and contributed several articles to specialty publications focused on that topic.

Ronald Dean Engelhardt

Ronald Dean Engelhardt, 77, known by many as “the ice cream man,” of Elkader, died Friday, January 10, 2020, at the Elkader Care Center. He was born October 7, 1942, in Farmersburg, IA, to Wendel Fred and Ivanelle (Kraus) Engelhardt. Ron was baptized on October 18, 1942, at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg and confirmed on May 20, 1956 at St. Paul Lutheran church in Monona. He graduated from MFL Community School at Monona.

On February 22, 1975, he was united in marriage to Rosemary Teresa Toale at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkader. The couple made their home in Elkader. Ron was employed by Miller Ice Cream Company for a number of years where he worked in manufacturing and sales, thus the name “the ice cream man.”.Later he started his own family business R and R. Dairy.
