Donald Wold

Donald Aden Wold, age 93, of Saint Olaf, Iowa, died February 23, 2020, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home. He was born on February 18, 1927, on the Wold family farm, rural Saint Olaf, Iowa, the son of Harrison and Gina Gilbertson Wold.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Berniece, his beloved parents, and all of his siblings, Rachel, Harrison, Ruth, and Leigh. He is survived by his daughter, Dawn, and her husband, Dr. David Herrmann; his grandson, Zach Herrmann and wife Jillian; and his great-granddaughter, Emmajean Herrmann.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2020, with a visitation one hour before - all at Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf with Rev. Marshall Hahn officiating. Interment was at Norway Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural St. Olaf.

Leonard Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elkader assisted the family.

Finding fossils at Elkader bank

During warm weather months, it's not uncommon to see FreedomBank President Keith Garms walking the perimeter of the building, stopping now and then to point out something to the people accompanying him. What Garms is doing is showing the fossils embedded in the limestone slabs that are part of façade of the Elkader bank.

Central girls continue to win; record is 21-3

With last week’s wins against Tripoli and Turkey Valley, the Central girls’ basketball team hit a new milestone: Most wins ever in a single season. The girls record stands at 21-3. They face St. Ansgar Wednesday (February 26); the victor will head to Des Moines for the girls’ state tournament.

Robert August Schultz

Robert August Schultz was born August 17, 1924, in Postville, Iowa. He died at Unity Point Health, Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa at the age of 95 years old.

Robert graduated from Luana Consolidated High School in Luana, Iowa in 1941 and started a farming career just outside of Luana.

Lyneen Cheeseman Blate

Lyneen Cheeseman Blate, 79, of Elkader passed away at the University of Iowa Hospitals on February 21, 2020. Lyneen was born February 8, 1941, to Robert E and LaVon (Kruse) Cheeseman. Lynn was a graduate of the Central Community High School Class of 1958. She later earned her masters degree and taught for many years for the Florida school system.

Lynn loved the country life and upon retirement returned to Elkader in 1998, with her late husband, Larry, and together they enjoyed the many animals and the wildlife that took up residence on their farm. She especially loved sharing her array of horses, dogs, cats and burrows with all who visited.

Lyneen was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two rainbow babies. Per Lyneen’s wishes, Iowa Cremation of Cedar Rapids, is in charge of private services to be held later this year. Online condolences may be directed to the family at www.iowacremation.com under Obituaries.

Joyce McClintock, 78, died suddenly at her home in Prairie du Chien, WI, on Saturday, February 15, 2020. Joyce Marie McClintock was born November 23, 1941, in Arlington, Iowa to Thomas and Catherine Berger Taylor.

Joyce spent most of her childhood years in and around Volga, Iowa, until her family moved to Blooming Prairie, MN for a better opportunity. She graduated from Blooming Prairie High School in 1959.

Gerald Joseph Beck

Elkader Gerald Joseph Beck, 93, of Elkader died peacefully Monday, February 17, 2020, at the Elkader Care Center. He was born May 13, 1926, on the family farm on “Doe Creek” in rural Edgewood, the son of Joseph C. Beck and Katherine Caroline (Hochhaus) Beck. He was baptized and confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport, Iowa, and on November 20, 1947, was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Beyer at Peace Church in Elkader. Incidentally, their marriage was on the same day as the royal wedding of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip. Gerald and his beloved Dorothy were inseparable and enjoyed 72 years of marriage. Two children were born of this union.

DNR to address possible hunting, trapping changes at public meeting

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hosting a series of town hall-style meetings where local staff will provide updates on recently completed hunting and trapping seasons, discuss possible changes to rules and regulations, and address other topics as requested.

Locally, the Iowa DNR will be at Decorah City Hall, 400 Clairborne Drive, Decorah, on Feb. 27. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.

“We want people to come out, listen to the seasons reviews, ask questions and hear directly from our staff,” said Todd Bishop, chief of the Iowa DNR’s Wildlife Bureau. “Part of the meeting will be devoted to discussing potential rule changes and collecting feedback as we work through the rules process.”

Central Girls win first regional game

The Central girls last week won the opening game in regional play defeating Ed-Co by a score of 52-30.  Three Warriors scored in double digits, including  Hannah Erickson who led the Warriors with 22 points.  Danielle Weber scored 16 and Natalie Schroeder added 10.  Central is now 19 and 3.  They hosted Tripoli in a regional quarterfinal play Tuesday night, after the Register went to press.
