Gerald Nesteby

Gerald Nesteby, 92, our father, father-in-law, grandpa, great-grandpa, oil man, bus driver and a member of the Elkader Country Club Seniors Foursome left us in peace Monday, May 18, 2015, at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City.

Gerald was born September 22, 1922, in Decorah, and he was most proud of being a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Army in the Aleutian Islands. He was a member of the VFW and had a special trip with other servicemen to Washington, D.C. on a 2011 Honor Flight.

Central students last week had a chance to display their work in a setting that fit the era of their subject matter. The students presented their research on the Civil War at the Carter House Museum and Annex.

Mary Ellen Horstman

Mary Ellen (Jones) Horstman, 86, of Guttenberg, Iowa, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2015, at the Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg.  Mary Ellen was born July 6, 1928, in Lima, Iowa, the daughter of Lloyd and Edith Mae (Homewood) Jones and stepfather William Jones. Her childhood years were spent in Wadena and Elkport. Mary Ellen was baptized at Wadena and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport. She attended the Elkport School.

On July 10, 1946, Mary Ellen married Alvin G. Horstman at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport. From this union five children were born.

Lyme Disease, treatable but often misdiagnosed

It’s as tiny as the period at the end of this sentence. It’s nearly impossible to see it on a dog. It’s barely visible to the human eye.  Yet, it can have a gigantic, life-changing impact on thousands of lives. It’s the primary tick that carries Lyme disease, particularly in this region of the United States. It’s the deer tick (also known as the black-legged tick).

With the last day of school quickly approaching, parent’s, grandparents, care providers and others might be wondering how they will keep youngsters entertained all summer. The folks at the Turkey River Recreational Corridor (TRRC) along with a long list of sponsors have a suggestion—actually 20 suggestions. TRRC is offering its third annual self-paced outdoor adventure that encourages families to explore different stops along the Turkey River in Clayton and Fayette counties.

Mary Peterman

Mary Rosellen (Murray) Peterman, 86, of Elkader, went to be with her Lord on May 4, 2015.  Mary was born on September 15, 1928, in Clermont, Iowa, to Thomas and Madge (Cline) Murray. She attended school in Wadena, Iowa. Mary married Forrest (Pete) Peterman on November 27, 1944, in Elkader, Iowa. To this union four children were born. Mary and Forrest celebrated over 56 years of marriage.

Dennis Hamann

Dennis Milton Hamann, 68, of Garnavillo, IA was born the son of Milton F. and Wilma (Witte) Hamann on June 14, 1946, in Postville, IA. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Farmersburg, IA. Following graduation from Garnavillo High School, Dennis served his country in the United States Army, where he received his A.A. degree in music. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Dennis married Beverly Behrend at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg, IA on July 20, 1968, a union that was blessed with two children. Dennis farmed for over 50 years but continued helping his neighbors with farm work after he retired.
