School start date. New law: No classes before August 23

The school start date debate is over.

Governor Terry Branstad signed a bill Friday afternoon setting August 23 as the earliest date that school can start in Iowa. Branstad described the bill as a compromise that will resolve the issue for the long term.

Name some of the places to which you’ve been assigned. What was the funniest incident you can recall as a preacher?”

Russell Wenger

 

Russell Wayne Wenger, 90, of Elkader, Iowa formerly of Elgin, Iowa died Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, Iowa. Russell was born July 22, 1924, to Charles and Marjorie (Cook) Wenger in Elgin, Iowa, and was baptized at Elgin Methodist Church on September 9, 1934. He graduated from Elgin High School.  In 1943, Russell enlisted in the Navy where he served his country honorably until 1946.

Russell was united in marriage to Avis Mork on December 29, 1951, at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa. To this union, three children were born, Steven, Craig and Paul.

Raymond Lower

 

Raymond A. Lower, 92, of Arlington, Iowa, died Friday afternoon, April 10, 2015, at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader.

Raymond Albert Lower was born August 23, 1922, on a farm west of Arlington, the son of Albert Leo and Katherine Lucille (Cornelson) Lower. He attended country school in rural Arlington and graduated from Maynard High School. Raymond proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. On February 9, 1947, he married Maxine Welch. To this union three children were born, twin daughters, Susan and Sally, and a son, Greg. Raymond and Maxine later divorced.

Corrine Roys

 

Corrine Rae Roys, 83, of Elkader, formerly of St. Olaf, passed away at the Elkader Care Center on Thursday April 9, 2015, after a short illness. She was born to Ray and Mabel (Erickson) Klingman on March 17, 1932, in Elgin, Iowa. She attended Hewitt Creek country school in Sperry Township and later the Volga High School.

Marcella “Marcy” Lenth

 

Marcella D. “Marcy” Lenth, 83, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Garnavillo, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, WI after a brief illness.  She was born November 28, 1931, in rural Monona, IA the daughter of Frank and Emma (Havlicek) Lestina.  She attended country school and was a graduate of Monona High School.  She married Arnold Lenth on November 21, 1957 at the First Lutheran Church in Waterloo, IA.  Together they farmed near Garnavillo where she enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening. He preceded her in death on June 2, 2009.

Mathew “Matt” Karpan

 

Mathew “Matt” Karpan was born on March 21, 1944, to John Sr. and Sarah “Babe” Karpan (Laws) in Des Moines, Iowa. He entered into eternal life on March 29, 2015.  Matt was known for his ferocity of spirit and even amazed many in the medical community, with his will to fight, against impossible odds throughout his journey.  Through this experience, Matt has taught many that living with cancer requires one to live with an attitude. An attitude to never give up, no matter what the odds are.

Duane Engelhardt

 

Duane Henry Engelhardt, formerly of St. Olaf, died March 30, 2015, in Summit, NJ, following a long battle with cancer.

Duane was a man with a loving heart for his wife of 57 years, Norma; three sons, Mark (Laura), Kevin (Tracey) and Jeff (Diane); eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Five local artists have been working since last August on something they hope will become a signature event for Elkader. The women are planning an “Art in the Park” weekend August 22 and 23 in Founders Park.

25 years of fishing fun

An event that started several years ago as a joke has become an Elkader fixture. 

The Redhorse Fisheree, which celebrates its 25th year in May, was lightheartedly suggested by a small group of local people in response to a big bass fishing tournament.
