Downtown businesses sponsor PdC Uncorked wine sampling event

 PdC Uncorked, a self-guided wine tasting event in downtown Prairie du Chien, will be held for the third year, Friday, May 19, from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

PdC Uncorked is an exclusive, one-of-a-kind experience allowing guests 21 years and older to sample newly-released wines and hors d’oeuvres while strolling between some of the finest businesses in the Prairie du Chien’s downtown district. Participating retailers are within a short walk from each other. Guests will begin the wine tasting at Prairie du Chien City Hall, 214 E. Blackhawk Ave.

Businesses taking part in this grand event include Peoples State Bank, Prairie du Chien Economic Development Corporation, Bob’s Bar, Howe Printing, Czajkowski Higgins & Tisdale Law Office, JC Party Store, Kramer Real Estate & Auction, Jim’s Bar and Ideal Furniture. This intimate gathering will provide an opportunity for attendees to taste artfully-crafted California wines and learn about the local businesses in the area.

Man defies odds of rare cancer, plans second ‘Run for the Health of It’

In the face of his cancer diagnosis, Lewis “Lew” Borgman has pulled himself up by his own bootstraps. He’s passed more than two years’ time with regular blood transfusions, natural supplements, a matter-of-fact sense of humor and the gift of gab.

He will celebrate all that—along with family, friends and medical staff at Mayo Clinic and Crossing Rivers Health—at his second annual Fun Run for the Health of It one-hour challenge, Saturday, May 20. The run/walk starts at 10 a.m. and lunch is at 11:30, on his property at 59178 Oak Grove Ridge Rd., in rural Eastman.

“The second annual poster says, ‘Ha ha. I’m still alive.’ Whether it’s just dumb luck, my particular system or something we’re doing right, I’m not giving up,” Lew pronounced.

Rummage Along the River is a 70-mile garage sale extravaganza that winds along Highway 35, Wisconsin’s Great River Road, through the communities of Stoddard, Genoa, the Bad Axe, De Soto, Ferryville and Lynxville along the river and Seneca and Mt. Sterling after you swing up County E to Highway 27. Sales are Friday and Saturday, May 19 and 20, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What better way to spend a Friday or Saturday than to drive the Great River Road National Scenic Byway, shop for bargains and enjoy the fabulous scenery, wildlife, local places and people.

This year, there’s a website for information on sales (www.rummagealongtheriver.com) in addition to the Rummage Along the River Facebook page. The sales map can be printed from those sites. Also, stop at the local convenience stores, village halls and retailers to pick up a listing of the sales.

Being safe while having fun is as easy as riding a bike

Children ages 4 to 14 are invited to attend the free bike safety program on Wednesday, May 17, at 5:30 p.m., at the Gundersen Prairie du Chien Clinic.

Bicycle riding is fun, healthy, and a great form of independence. But it is important to remember that a bicycle is not a toy; it’s a vehicle.

A free bike safety program Wednesday evening, May 17, at the Gundersen Prairie du Chien Clinic, is scheduled to share safety tips, challenge riders on a course and offer bike and helmet checks. This event, which has been offered for more than 16 years, is geared toward children ages 4 to 14 years old.

The program will begin at 5:30 p.m., in the parking lot of the health clinic, where bike and helmet checks will be done and kids will be invited to navigate a “bike rodeo course,” complete with stop signs and opportunities to practice making turns. At 6:15 p.m., the crowd will head into the clinic lobby for a presentation about bike safety, given by Officer Ashley Erickson, of the Prairie du Chien Police Department.

Benton defeats RRC girls

Benton-Shullsburg defeated host River Ridge-Cassville 6-3 in a Six Rivers West softball game Monday afternoon in Patch Grove. 

The Zephyrs scored a run in the top of the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead. 

Each team scored in the fourth as the Zephyrs led 2-1.

Benton-Shullsburg defeated host River Ridge 6-2 in a Western Six Rivers baseball game Monday afternoon in Patch Grove. 

River Ridge took a 2-0 lead after one complete inning. 

Benton scored a run in the top of the second and another in the third to tie the game at 2-2.

Wauzeka-Steuben edged host Seneca 5-4 in a Ridge and Valley softball game Thursday afternoon. 

Wauzeka-Steuben improved to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Seneca dropped to 7-6 on the season and 3-5 in the Ridge and Valley.

Seneca will next travel to Weston on May 8.
