Driver allegedly steals vehicle for 3-county joyride

On March 4, at 12:49 a.m., a Crawford County deputy was patrolling the area of Highway 60 and Highway 131, when the deputy noticed parts off of a vehicle lying on the double yellow line of Highway 60.

The investigation found that a vehicle was traveling westbound on Highway 60, crossed the center line and hit the guardrail located on the southwest side of the highway, which caused severe damage to the guardrail. The deputy also found a license plate left at the scene belonging to a 1997 Toyota Rav4 registered to Bradly P. Blaskowski, 51, Madison.

Further investigation found that Blaskowski’s vehicle was stolen from Double K’s Bar in the city of Boscobel an estimated 12 minutes before the crash scene was found by the Crawford County deputy.  

A Prairie du Chien Police Department officer overheard the radio traffic and remembered seeing the vehicle in question crossing over the Highway 18 Bridge heading into Iowa.

Six-month investigation leads to meth, marijuana bust in Prairie du Chien

On Friday, March 10, at approximately 7 p.m., the Prairie du Chien Police Department conducted a search warrant at 1119 S. 11th St. in the city of Prairie du Chien, based on a narcotics investigation which spanned nearly six months dating back to October 2016.

The residence belongs to a Steven Mahlstedt, 36, and Jessica Mahlstedt, 34. Items found and seized during the search warrant were marijuana, marijuana paraphernalia, methamphetamine, methamphetamine paraphernalia and items associated with the distribution of narcotics.

As a result of the search warrant, Steven Mahlstedt was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, delivery of marijuana, possession with the intent to deliver marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Jessica Mahlstedt was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession with the intent to deliver marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both were transported and booked into the Crawford County Jail.

PdC Main Street is in the inception phase of creating an audio walking tour of the historical, cultural and personal narratives that can bring the character of the community alive. Whether it’s attributable to a documented source or rather a peculiar tale of one person’s memory, it’s worth being shared.

Top seeded Seneca’s season came to an end Thursday night at Reedsburg Area High School as second seeded Shullsburg won the Division 5 sectional semifinal 68-63 in boys basketball action.

Kiwanis unlock communication barrier for children with autism via iPad program

Through the iPads for Autism Project of the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Kiwanis District, the Prairie du Chien Kiwanis Club recently provided one iPad with a Big Grips protective case and $50 of apps designed for people with Autism to a local high school student and $50 in apps to another high school student. This was the first presentation of its kind in the community and an emotional and heartfelt appreciation was evident from the students, parents and the staff of these students. The Kiwanis Club of Prairie du Chien is helping to unlock the communication barrier for children with autism.

A symptom of autism is verbal and nonverbal communication problems. According to the Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation (ASDF), the gamut of issues runs from mild to severe. Regardless, individuals with autism have a difficult time expressing their feelings, forming words and communicating in general.

“A traditional approach to help break the communication barrier was for therapists or caregivers to use hand-laminated picture cards, which did not work well outside of that circle. Equipment was also developed to assist an autistic child in communicating, but was only beneficial at therapy because the equipment was bulky, heavy and expensive,” the ASDF website explains.

According to Walter’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.
