Dennis Ray “Bud” Moose

Dennis Ray “Bud” Moose, 56, of McGregor, Iowa, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, at his home in McGregor. 

 

Dennis was born on Oct. 31, 1960, to Hubert and Betty (Moses) Moose in Prairie du Chien. He graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1979.

Olivia Marie Smith

Olivia Marie Smith, infant daughter of Jessica Fuller-Graham and Jeremy Smith, of Prairie du Chien, passed away shortly after birth on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the Crossing Rivers Health Care Center in Prairie du Chien. She is survived by her parents and grandparents; Butch and Norma Smith, Marti Graham, Theresa Lofgran and Pam Buchen.

Sixth seeded River Ridge beat visiting and 11th seeded Southwestern 64-53 in a WIAA Division 5 Regional boys basketball game Tuesday night. 

Freshman Cole Crubel poured in a game-high 32 points to pace the Timberwolves.

Local support secures fresh water, brings life to Haitian village

The Lolo, Haiti, village received clean, fresh water for the first time in February, thanks to support from volunteers living in the Bridgeport area. Pictured, villagers and their children fill up containers during the joyous moments after the water pump provided the first drops of safe water for them.

For the very first time, a small village in the impoverished nation of Haiti has clean and fresh water. It’s all thanks to donations and volunteer support provided by the Cornerstone Foursquare Church in Bridgeport, the Coastal Community Church in South Carolina and the Iowa-based non-profit Water For Life. The Lolo Community Well Project will be completed this month, as the finishing touches of a well house are underway.

A few years ago, the Cornerstone Church became connected to a couple of volunteers from South Carolina, who were originally from Madison—Nick and Kate Matthias. Their Madison pastor had done mission work in Haiti and helped link them to Lolo, Haiti, after they moved to the East Coast. During a medical mission to Lolo, Nick, an engineer specializing in renewable energies, and Kate, a pediatrician, recognized a real need for a fresh source.

Shake up at Prairie du Chien City Hall continues with familiar faces

The shake-up at Prairie du Chien City Hall continues, as a new zoning administrator was appointed during Tuesday night’s common council meeting and the creation of an administrative assistant position was approved.

Cassie Rickleff was named the new zoning administrator, filling the vacancy left by Julie Jackson, who departed the first week of January for a new position with Crawford County. City Planner Garth Frable was the interim zoning administrator. Rickleff will take the job as soon as the new administrative assistant is hired. Rickleff will receive a new salary of $20 per hour upon completion of a six-month probationary period, plus an additional $1.50 per hour for her added duties of municipal court clerk. Furthermore, Deputy City Clerk Joni Clausen will receive an increase in her salary from $17.57 to $18 per hour.

De Soto man wins Powerball

David Fredrickson, of De Soto, is one of two lucky players who matched four numbers plus the Powerball in the Feb. 18 Powerball drawing to win $50,000. Fredrickson purchased his ticket at Pronto Market, 10110 Highway 35, De Soto.

Robert Lienke, of Eagle River in Vilas County, was the other lucky player.  The winning numbers from the drawing were 3, 7, 9, 31 and 33 with a Powerball of 20. The Power Play number was 3.

Celebrate the green in Prairie du Chien with St. Patrick’s Day parade and festivities

The annual St. Patrick’s Day parade and festivities sponsored by the Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce will be held on Saturday, March 11, at 10 a.m. Parade participants will assemble at 9 a.m. on St. Feriole Island. The parade will start from the island, go east on Blackhawk Avenue, north on Michigan Street, west on Washington Street and then back to the island.

Following the parade, many area businesses will join the Irish-themed fun by serving corned beef and cabbage, green beer, and other traditional specialties. Lively music will be offered throughout the community.

Olympic Builders Gets Contract

The 750-seat Arts Center at the high school will have improved acoustics, storage, support space, lighting, sound and an orchestra pit and cover with a hydraulic lift.

Prairie du Chien cheerleaders are best in Small Cheer Dance Division

The Prairie du Chien Blackhawk Competition Cheerleaders attended the 2017 WACPC State Cheer Competition on  Saturday, Feb. 25. The event was held at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. 

 

The team competed in the Small Cheer Dance Division.  The cheerleaders earned first place, making them the state champions of that division!

Area wrestlers 

at Individual State Wrestling Tournament

Two Prairie du Chien wrestlers and one from River Ridge-Cassville competed in the State Individual Wrestling Tournament Thursday and Friday at the Kohl Center in Madison. 

Prairie freshman Traeton Saint, wrestling at 132 pounds in Division 2, lost 5-3 to junior Tanner Deist (41-11) of Wautoma-Wild Rose in his first round match. Saint ended his season with a 40-10 record. It is the most wins ever by a Prairie du Chien freshman.
