Paul Anthony Scheckel, 50, beloved oldest son of Larry and Ann Scheckel, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Gundersen Medical Center of complications of pneumonia.

Sand bags deployed for flooded homes due to rain

At least two reported homes in Crawford County experienced flooding due to rain water last week, according to the Crawford County Sheriff's Office.

On Tuesday, Jan. 17, at about 8 p.m.,  the sheriff’s office was informed of a residence that had a basement actively flooding due to rain water. The Crawford County Emergency Management Office and the Prairie du Chien Police Department obrained, filled and deployed sandbags. Some 10 to 20 sand bags filled for the residence.

“It was very nice to have the support of the police department to assist in filling the bags,” said Emergency Management Director Jim Hackett.

Woman injured in Grant County rollover

A Bloomington woman was seriously injured in a one-vehicle rollover in Grant County Thursday morning, Jan. 19, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Department.

Just after 7 a.m., the sheriff’s office was notified of the crash at the intersection of Highway 18 and Fairground Road. Driver Janelle Crubel, 60, was trapped in her vehicle. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, Crubel was freed from the vehicle by the Jaws of Life and transported to Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien with serious but non-life threatening injures. According to the family, she was later taken to Gundersen hospital in La Crosse for treatment of a broken back and leg.

Crubel was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash. No charges have been filed, according to the sheriff’s department. The vehicle was a total loss and was removed from the scene by B&M Towing, of Bloomington.

K-9 unit aids in meth arrest

On Jan. 19, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department K-9 unit conducted a vehicle contact in the parking lot of Wal-Mart located in Bridgeport Township.

 
The passenger in the vehicle exited and approached two other occupied parked vehicles. After identifying the parties in all three vehicles, K-9 Breck was utilized for open free air sniffs of all the vehicles. K-9 Breck alerted to the presence of one or more controlled substances on a 1993 Chevrolet pickup occupied by Dillan Boydtson, 34, Decorah, Iowa. A probable cause search of Boydston’s vehicle was conducted and a hypodermic needle loaded with liquid methamphetamine was located in the vehicle.

Boydtson was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and operating a motor vehicle with a restricted controlled substance.

Assisting the sheriff’s department was the Prairie du Chien Police Department.

Relay For Life kick-off celebration offers public enjoyable evening out to share ideas

The Great River Relay For Life is planning a new location and a new format for 2017. This year’s annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society will take place at Hoffman Hall in Prairie du Chien on Friday, May 19, from 5 to 11 p.m.

To kick off the fundraising season, Relay For Life is hosting a casual celebration for people interested in gathering to ask questions, provide suggestions, learn more details or simply observe the achievements the local relay has made in the past. On Thursday, Jan. 26, beginning at 5 p.m., The Barn Restaurant in Prairie du Chien will host the informal event. Cancer survivors, past and present, family and friends, as well as supportive area community members are invited to come together, order a good meal from The Barn’s menu and enjoy the evening out. The Barn is generously donating a percentage of the night’s proceeds toward the relay.

The Eagles Heart and Cancer Telethon is here again. It will take place at Bluff View School Saturday, Jan. 28, from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. Participate in person or watch it on TV or online. The 42nd annual Eagles Heart and Cancer Telethon is Saturday, Jan. 28, from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m., at Bluff View School in Prairie du Chien. It will be broadcast live on local Mediacom channel 6 and online (link will be available on Facebook: Eagles Heart and Cancer Telethon PDC).

In 2016, a record-setting $43,700 was raised, taking the total over the past four decades to $810,566.

“The telethon’s roots are in our ability to put on a television show and we encourage people to get on their telephone and make a pledge,” said co-host Nelson, who has been a driving force of the telethon from nearly the beginning. “That’s what our grassroots past is all about. Local talent is our focus and it’s entirely Prairie du Chien’s own. Our community is what adds character to this project and it doesn’t take away from the mission of what we’re doing.”
