Pair face pending meth charges after traffic stop

Two individuals were arrested on pending charges of methamphetamine possession in Prairie du Chien the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, according to Prairie du Chien Police Chief Chad Abram.

On Nov. 23, at about 2:30 a.m., a Prairie du Chien officer conducted a routine traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Tamara Messler, 34, of Garber, Iowa. While investigating the stop, both Messler and her passenger, Kyle Vanderbilt, 30, of Prairie du Chien, were found to be in possession of meth. Messler and Vanderbilt were arrested and transported to the Crawford County Jail. Charges are pending, Abram said.

Several crashes involving farm machinery reported

On Thursday, Dec. 1 at 5:27 p.m., the Craw1ford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of multiple crashes involving a truck pulling a piece of farm equipment. Some of the callers were stating the crash took place on Highway 61 near Marietta Valley Road in the township of Marietta. Other callers stated the farm equipment caused a crash in the city of Boscobel in Grant County. It was later determined that there were two different crashes involving the piece of farm machinery, one in Boscobel and one on Highway 61.

Donald H. Wood, 53, Montfort, was traveling southbound on Highway 61 in a 2015 Mack truck when he met a 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 truck pulling a piece of farm equipment 18 feet, 11 inches wide northbound on a bridge. The Mack truck is owned by Darling Ingredients Inc. of Des Moines, Iowa. The operator of the truck pulling the farm equipment was Kevin C. Lewandowski, 48, Thorp, Wis., and his passenger was Darrell G. Zurakowski, 46, also of Thorp.

Sugar poured in truck gas tank

On Wednesday, Nov. 30, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department initially received a report of damage to a 2008 Ford F250 Super Duty truck. The damage resulted from sugar being poured into the fuel tank of the truck. The incident occurred sometime between 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, and 2 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19. The truck had been parked at the Mt. Zion Pub in the township of Scott.

The Crawford County Crime Stoppers urges anyone having information about this or any other crimes to call 326-8933 or 1-866-779-PAYS.

Anyone calling either of these numbers with a Crime Stoppers tip will remain anonymous and a reward of up to $1,000 will be paid for a tip which solves a crime with an arrest, charges being filed and/or recovery of stolen property.

Crawford County investigation into sex trafficking leads to arrest in Tennessee

On May 9, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department investigated a theft from a residence located on Oak Grove Ridge Road in Eastman Township. The Sheriff’s Department’s K-9 Unit responded and made contact with LeRoy Williams IV, 33, of Eastman.

Williams stated that he had items stolen from his residence while he was away in Tennessee. Williams said that his neighbor was the person who stole the items.

During the investigation, a woman whom Williams referred to as his girlfriend, confided in the deputy that she was being held against her will by Williams and that she was the victim of human sex trafficking. She said she was in fear of her safety and Williams had been “pimping” her out for money in La Crosse, and that they would travel to other states for the same purpose.  

The woman was removed from the residence in Eastman.

City does not fully fund PdC Main Street request

For the first time in Prairie du Chien history, according to city administration, the city’s common council failed to pass a proposed budget, during a special meeting Thursday, Dec. 1.

“We cannot leave the building without passing a budget this evening,” City Administrator Aaron Kramer said.

With that understood, an amended budget was ultimately approved, after Mayor Dave Hemmer broke his second tie council vote of the meeting, also a first-ever occurrence.

The entire conversation centered on the stability of the PdC Main Street program, which has faced its share of hurdles in recent years. The entity originally requested a $15,000 contribution from the city for 2017. The finance committee decreased that to $14,000 and, Thursday night, the final motion cut it much further, to $4,000.

Driver takes eyes off the road, causes two-vehicle crash near Lancaster

Taking his eyes off the road to put out a cigarette ended up causing a crash for one man, involving several others, in the North Lancaster Township Friday morning, Nov. 18, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 11:30 a.m., deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 61 near Enterprise Drive. Patricia Martin, 79, of Bloomington, was traveling northbound on the highway in her 2006 Buick LaCrosse. Fabian Hurley, 54 of Prairie du Chien, was also traveling northbound on Highway 61 in his 2005 Ford F150, behind Martin's vehicle. As Martin was slowing to make a left-hand turn and waiting for oncoming traffic to pass, Hurley was looking down to put out a cigarette. By the time he tried to stop, he could not do so in time and rear-ended Martin’s vehicle.
