Meeting to preview Highway 18 project

A public information meeting to preview the upcoming U.S. Highway 18 reconstruction will be held Thursday, March 3, at 6 p.m. at the Bridgeport Fire Station, 63176 Vineyard Rd., Prairie du Chien.

Work is scheduled to begin mid-March to reconstruct Highway 18 into a four-lane highway between South Town Lane and Highway 60. Construction on the $16.7 million project is scheduled to continue to November and resume in the spring of 2017. Completion is expected in May 2017.

Access to residences and businesses will be maintained during construction. Highways 18 and 60 will remain open to traffic. Some side roads will be closed for reconstruction and access will be provided via alternate routes. Public notification prior to those closures will occur.

The public is invited to attend the meeting. DOT project staff and contractors will be available for questions after a short presentation.

Prairie du Chien/Wauzeka-Steuben’s Clayton Beers (120#) ended his high school career in style Saturday afternoon at the WIAA State Tournament. The senior was able to win the last match of his career, and while doing it climb the podium to the third place spot.

Weston defeated host Wauzeka-Steuben 77-49 in a Ridge and Valley boys basketball game Thursday night. 

Weston’s Trenton Boland led all scorers with 19 points. Ramsey Arneson netted 18 and Marcus Schmitt added 17.

Evelyn B. Seeley

 

Evelyn B. Seeley died Feb. 26, at the Great River Care Center in McGregor, after an extended illness. 

She was born Oct. 15, 1933, to Alfred and Anne (Maly) Sawall in Ottumwa, Iowa, and adopted by Louis and Bertha (Cabalka) Blaha of Cedar Rapids. She graduated from Wilson High School and Coe College. She and James W. Seeley were married June 2, 1957. Evelyn was a teacher and choir director and very active in her churches. She had a passion for music, gardening, birds, and her many dogs.

Janet I. Smethurst

 

Janet I. Smethurst, 85, of Prairie du Chien passed away Thursday, Feb. 25. 

She and “Will” are crossing the Rainbow Bridge together. She was born July 11, 1930 in Brodtville, the daughter of Milo and Velma (Sitts) Bean. She married Will Smethurst on June 27, 1951 and he later preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 2006. Jan worked as a driver and cook for the Crawford County Head Start Program, and later as a switchboard operator for the Crawford County Administration Building. After her retirement she worked at Betty’s Hallmark in the Commerce Court Mall.

Georgeine McCloskey

 

Georgeine McCloskey, 94, of Wauzeka, passed away Friday, Feb. 26, at the Prairie Maison Care Center. 

She was born Feb. 6, 1922 in Wauzeka, daughter of George and Mary Ellen (Nugent) McCloskey. She taught at the Dutch Ridge School and later retired from the United States Postal Service after 32 years of service. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Church in Wauzeka.  

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Marnell McCloskey; two sisters, Lucille Doll and Marian McCloskey along with a half sister Myrtle Vogt.

Martin L. “Marty” Ohlert

 

 Martin L. “Marty” Ohlert, 75, of Prairie du Chien passed away on his 75th birthday Friday, Feb. 26. 

He was born Feb. 26, 1941 in Prairie du Chien the son of LeRoy and Zola (Martin) Ohlert. He served in the US Army. Marty married Alice Snyder on Feb. 10, 1974 in Coon Valley. He worked as an interior designer for Statz Home Furnishings and later sold drapery for the Countryside Workshop. Most recently Marty worked in mobile home sales.

Pamela Sue (Johnson) Freitag

 

Pamela Sue (Johnson) Freitag, 54, passed away at Central Community Hospital on Feb. 23, after battling a life-long illness. 

She was born in Hinsdale, Ill., to Paul L. and Betty L. (Pust) Johnson on Aug. 7, 1961. She was a graduate of Central Community School and attended Kirkwood Community College. On April 4, 1981 she married Dennis Freitag at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkader. To this union, a daughter, Ann Marie was born.
