Lock and Dam 10 annual navigation report

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, has released its 2022 navigation statistics for the Upper Mississippi River.

During the 2022 season, Corps staff supported 1,969 commercial navigation lockages at Lock and Dam 10, at Guttenberg, which is below the 10-year average of 2,232 lockages.

Garry L. Moser

Garry Lee Moser, 77, of Guttenberg, died Wednesday Dec. 7, 2022, at Mercy One Hospital in Dubuque. 

Visitation and funeral services were Dec. 17 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, with burial at Bethel Cemetery.

Garry was born Sept. 7, 1945, in Postville, to Ira and VerdaMae (Noack) Moser. He was united in marriage on Nov. 20, 1965, to Fern Latteyer.

On Dec. 4, St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Garnavillo honored their longtime organist Sharon Stade for 50 years of dedicated service.

The event was unexpected for Stade. "We totally surprised her! It was a glorious and wonderful celebration in honor of her dedication to our church and our Lord," said Shirley Balk, a church member.

Carol Tomkins of Guttenberg was baptized, confirmed, and married at St. John's Church in Guttenberg. 

The 88-year-old, soon to be 89, continues to be an active member of her church through mission work in collaboration with Lutheran World Relief, a worldwide program.

City council hires public works director

The Guttenberg city council voted to offer the position of Public Works Director to Dan Pierce at the regular monthly meeting on Dec. 12. Pierce, who has been a city public works employee for many years, will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of long-time city employee Dan Walke.

Clarence Elmer Hansel, 88, of Strawberry Point, formerly of Colesburg, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point.

Visitation was Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood and before the services at the church on Wednesday.

Funeral service were Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the Colesburg United Methodist Church in Colesburg, conducted by Rev. Roger White.

Emma Lou Gull, 91, longtime Elkport-Garber resident, died on Friday, Dec. 9, 2022, after a brief illness, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood.

Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m., on Friday, Dec. 16, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Dec. 17, at Mount Harmony Cemetery, in rural Garber, conducted by Pastor Mike Jackson.

Shirley Jane Davies, 79, of Garber died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022, at Regional Medical Center in Manchester surrounded by family.

Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16, 2022, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home in Guttenberg. 

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg with burial in the church cemetery, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.
