New procedure at city council special meeting


The Guttenberg city council met in special session on March 23 using virtual technology due to concerns about the spread of the COVID-19 virus. There was a limit of 10 people allowed in the council chambers, and two council members communicated via video conference, as did several other meeting participants. Lending a hand to those in need is second nature to Valerie Heck-Cromer and her husband, Jason. The couple has moved back to the area to be closer to family after they retired from their respective Naval careers. Valerie retired as a First Class Petty Officer and Jason retired as a Master Chief. Valerie is the daughter of Margo and Vernon Heck of Guttenberg.

Owen Harbaugh, 72, of Guttenberg, died Thursday, March 26, 2020, at home surrounded by his family.

A memorial service planned for a future date will be announced.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Clark E. Frommelt

Clark Edward Frommelt, 81, of Dubuque, died Sunday, March 22, 2020, at Manor Care Center in Dubuque.

A private family graveside service was held. The family plans to hold a public memorial at a later date.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Frederick H. Thein, 91, of Rockton, Ill., passed away on March 19, 2020 at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, Wis.

Per his request, there will be no visitation or services.

Cremation rites to be accorded and inurnment to take place in Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum, Cedar Rapids.

Betty L. Billmeyer

Betty Lou Billmeyer, 73, of Colesburg, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2020, at MercyOne Medical Center in Dyersville.

Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family will not be having a public memorial at this time.

Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood assisted the family.

Caring for a loved one who has been diagnosed with dementia can be a very rewarding and challenging experience. Dorothy Gable of Dubuque authored a book in 2018 titled Dementia Caregiving from a Biblical Perspective: Your Guide for the Journey. 

Gable presented her program on dementia caregiving to the Guttenberg Rotary Club at its weekly meeting on Feb. 20 at the Stadium Bar and Grill.
