City council considers eliminating fluoride in water

he Guttenberg city council at its monthly meeting on Aug. 11 opened a discussion on the fluoridation of city water; appointed a new city attorney, and heard a report on train horns.

Maxine J. Bebber, 72, of North Buena Vista passed away Saturday, Aug. 9, 2025, at her home surrounded by family.

Celebration of Life will be held from 2 – 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, at Morris Funeral Home in Guttenberg.

Maxine was born on Oct. 14, 1952, in La Crosse, Wis., daughter of Willard Elliott. She married Larry Bebber on Dec. 5, 1975, in Galena, Ill.

Funeral services were Aug. 13, at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Guttenberg.

Plagman Barn celebrates 100 years

The rafters rang with music by Triple Threat at the 100th-year birthday party on Aug. 9 at Plagman Barn. The dance was well attended, and cut-outs of different time periods were set up for photo opportunities. Youngsters sang "Happy Birthday" prior to the serving of cupcakes. (Photo submitted)

A century of music, memories and rural traditions was celebrated at the Plagman Barn’s “100th Birthday” Dance, hosted by the Northeast Iowa Farm & Antique Association on Saturday, Aug. 9.

The 136-foot-long barn was originally built near Garber in 1925 by Bill Plagman, and was constructed specifically as a meeting space for barn dances. Its first dance was in September of 1925, and the building continued to be used for this purpose until October 1939.

The Clayton County SxS Riders is a community-driven non-profit formed in 2022, when a group of like-minded individuals who were passionate about the sport of recreational riding came together. In 2023, they received their 501(c)(3) designation and became a recognized non-profit.

Community impact grant apps sought

Foundation of Cornerstone Communities is seeking applications for community impact grants up to $10,000 that enhance health and vitality within the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital and Clinics (GMHC) service region.

The FCC encourages nonprofits with a 5013C status to apply for funds to help community ideas and projects soar. GMHC communities that have received past FCC grants include Guttenberg, Garnavillo, Elkader, McGregor-Marquette, Luxemberg, North Buena Vista, Colesburg and Edgewood.

St. Maria Goretti Court 1545 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas celebrated its 75th anniversary in July.

The court was incorporated in McGregor on July 2, 1950, just days after its patron saint—an 11-year-old Italian girl noted for forgiving her attacker while on her deathbed in 1902—was canonized by the Catholic Church.

Riding a horse is not an effortless activity. It requires stamina, strength and determination to mount a half-ton animal with a mind of its own and guide it from one point to another—never mind obstacles and hurdles. Even for skilled riders in their physical prime, the task is difficult, requiring the utmost discipline.

That's what makes a centenarian horse ride, where the age of the rider and the horse equal 100, a major achievement.

Market Night to be featured at River of Music this Friday

The popular River of Music concert series in Guttenberg's Ingleside Park will feature Market Night on Friday, Aug. 8. This is the second Market Night of the summer — the first one was held in June and organizers were pleased with the response.

Market Night will give local businesses the opportunity to showcase their products and services at booths near the music venue. Participating businesses will feature various offerings, such as give-aways, free samples, discounts, career opportunities and items for sale. "Come see what Guttenberg's local businesses have to offer," invite organizers.

A Celebration of Life honoring Donald Dean Nelson and Carma Loma (Schuman) Nelson will be held as an open house on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 1-3 p.m. at the Guttenberg Country Club.

A private burial will take place earlier that day at Strawberry Point Cemetery.
