Visitation and celebration of life was Saturday, Oct. 27, at the United Methodist Church in Colesburg.

Burial was at the Brown Cemetery in Colesburg.

Dr. Russell Loven to receive Distinguished Service Award

Homecoming weekend at Luther College in Decorah will be a memorable one for Guttenberg resident Dr. Russell Loven, who will receive the Luther Distinguished Service Award at an awards dinner that kicks off weekend festivities on the campus.

The award will be presented Friday evening, Oct. 26,  by Luther President Paula Carlson in Peace Dining Room, Dahl Centennial Union, on the Luther campus.

Halloween is just a week away but before you take the kids out in their costumes to trick or treat, there is another great family outing opportunity. The Umbrella Arts Fall Chill Spooktacular event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27, at Lakeside Ballroom in Guttenberg.

School board hears reports, updates; elects officers at special meeting

The Clayton Ridge School board, meeting in regular session on Oct. 16, heard reports from administrators, approved the instructional support levy and approved a request for state aid.

President John Heying led members Christine Aulwes, Mike Finnegan, Ellen Johnson and Kathy Ihde through the evening's agenda. Not present were board members Alecia Helle and Jason Reimer. Also attending were Superintendent Shane Wahls, secretary-treasurer David Schlueter and Steve Hoff.

Rita Alice Eulberg, 80, of Garnavillo, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018, at Guttenberg Care Center.

Visitation was Sunday, Oct. 21, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 22, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo, conducted by Marvin Bries.

City council tables food truck ordinance and pool change

The Guttenberg city council at its regular monthly meeting on  Monday, Oct. 6, again discussed revisions to an ordinance governing mobile food vendors, tabled a design change request for the new pool bathhouse, and approved the purchase of a new ambulance.

Guttenberg merchants are getting into the Halloween spirit once again with Ghouls and Goblins Night Out. The eighth annual event, scheduled for 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, gives adults the opportunity to celebrate Halloween and support Guttenberg businesses. This year's event features a new twist — a costume contest with prizes.

Pastor Shane Anderson of Guttenberg, who serves St. John's Lutheran and St. Paul Lutheran Churches, recently stepped into an additional role — chaplain for the Guttenberg Police Department. He was appointed to the newly-created position by the city council in June.

"We are pleased to have Pastor Shane as our police chaplain," commented Police Chief George Morteo. "He will be a valuable asset to our department as we serve the community."
