Guttenberg native oversees river royalty fleet

Gary Frommelt, a native of Guttenberg who is now vice-president of marine operations for the American Queen Steamboat Co., recently accompanied the American Duchess riverboat on its maiden voyage, a round-trip journey from New Orleans to Red Wing, Minn.

Rodger C. Sear Jr.

Rodger Cletus Sear Jr., 75, of Garber, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017, at his home near Garber.

Visitation was Sunday, Sept. 10, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg and before services at the church.

Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 11, at St John’s Congregational Church in Garber.

Rodger was the son of Rodger and Betty Sear Sr., born Oct. 23, 1941, in Dubuque.

Kuempel clock kits were once made in Guttenberg

A small mantel clock in a wooden case was recently donated to the Lockmaster's House Heritage Museum by Ken and Mickey Strader of rural Guttenberg. The clock face bears the wording "The Kuempel Clocksters, Guttenberg, Iowa."

Clayton Ridge School board election set for Tuesday, Sept. 12

Voters in the Clayton Ridge Community School District will go to the polls on Tuesday, Sept. 12, to choose directors for three open seats on the board of directors.

Incumbents Michael W. Finnegan and Kathy Ihde have filed for re-election. No candidates have filed for the third seat, leaving the opportunity for a write-in candidate to be elected to the position.

Business has been steady since the United Sportsmen’s Company (USC) opened its Guttenberg storefront on May 15 selling handguns, rifles, shotguns, ammunition, magazines, optics, knives and accessories. 

“We specialize in custom made guns, scopes, reloading components, and ammunition. We also sell camouflage clothes and duck decoys,” said the Freeport, Ill., based business owner Brendan Walsh. “We buy estates, if somebody is retiring and selling all their guns and vintage collections.”

Susie Koss

Susie Koss, 56, of Discovery Bay, Calif., was called to heaven Aug. 28, 2017, at home with her husband by her side, after fighting cancer for nine years.

Surviving are her husband, Tim (4429 Clipper Dr., Discovery Bay, CA 94505); mother and father-in-law, Don and Elaine Koss of Garnavillo; a sister-in-law, Lori Koss of Elkader; two nieces and a nephew.

Guttenbergers enjoy the Great American Eclipse

Guttenberg experienced almost 90 percent coverage of the sun during the solar eclipse on Monday, Aug. 21. The partial eclipse began at 11:47 a.m. and reached its maximum at 1:12 p.m., ending at 2:35 p.m. Residents watched the event in a variety of ways, from live streams on the internet and pinhole cameras to gatherings with friends.

Superintendent Shane Wahls presented an update on school facility projects to parents and students in both Guttenberg and Garnavillo on Tuesday, Aug. 22, in preparation for the start of the new school year. Voters approved an increase in the PPEL levy in February, but because the school district opted to lower levy amounts for its management and cash reserve funds, the tax actually decreased by one-third of a cent to $10.92.

The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau’s sTEP (Special Traffic Enforcement Program) project for this upcoming Labor Day weekend.
