Dennis R. Moose

Dennis Ray “Bud” Moose, 56, of McGregor, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017, at his home in McGregor. 

Visitation was Friday, March 3, at Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in McGregor. 

A Celebration of Life will be held at Josie’s River Queen in McGregor, at a later date.

Inurnment will be held at Clayton Cemetery, Clayton at a later date.

Marjorie Felland

Marjorie Felland, 94, passed away at the Guttenberg Care Center, Guttenberg on March 1, 2017.

Funeral services were Monday, March 6, at St John’s Lutheran Church, Guttenberg.

Graveside inurnment service for both Marj and hrer husband, Wally will occur on March 25, at 11:30 a.m. at the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

SMIC Extravaganza features new dueling pianos

Lakeside Ballroom was humming with activity on Saturday, March 4, as St. Mary Immaculate Conception School held their annual fundraiser Extravaganza. Over 300 event tickets were sold to participants who enjoyed a meal, bid on silent auction items, and sang along with piano entertainment.

Public art project moves forward

The Art Advisory Committee for the public art project to be developed in downtown Guttenberg met on Thursday, Feb. 23, to discuss how to move forward. The project to be placed in downtown Guttenberg is one of 15 being implemented along Scenic Byways throughout Iowa by Scenic Byway partners.

The Committee, made up of local “doers” such as Emily Sadewasser, Juanita Loven, Russell Loven, Lori Wallace, Gary Goyette, Chris Schoen, and many others, has developed a theme to reflect aquatic Mississippi River life befitting of Guttenberg’s “sense of place.”

Firefighters plan door-to-door sales

Members of the Guttenberg Fire Department will be going door-to-door on Monday, March 20, selling tickets for their annual dance, set for Saturday, March 25, at Lakeside Ballroom in Guttenberg.

Those wishing to purchase a ticket should turn on their porchlight.

The event will feature music by Pizzin in the Wind from 6 p.m. to 12 midnight. In addition to admission to the dance, ticket holders will be eligible for numerous prize drawings.

Sheila K. Smith

Sheila Kay Smith of Guttenberg died Feb. 20, 2017, of congestive heart failure at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque.

A church service was held on Saturday, Feb. 25, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Guttenberg with burial in the Kann Cemetery.

Sheila Kay Smith was born Sept. 10, 1946, the first child of Kenneth and Shirley (Harbaugh) Berns, at Garnavillo. The majority of her life she worked in the laundry department at the care center and the assisted living center. She was a hard-working, honest person who touched many lives in her 70 years.

Helen M. Storbeck

Helen Martha Storbeck, 88, of Elkader, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center.

Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 25, at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader, conducted by Rev. Jon Haack. Visitation was before services at the church.

Interment was at East Side Cemetery, Elkader.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home, Elkader was in charge of arrangements.

Two Legion posts choose Boys State candidates

Two American Legion posts have announced their selections to attend Hawkeye Boys State this summer.

Clayton Boeke, son of Shawn and Sue Boeke, and Braydn Harbaugh, son of Chad and Kari Harbaugh, have been chosen by Prairie La Porte Post 373 to be delegates to the 78th American Legion Hawkeye Boys State held in Camp Dodge, Johnston, June 10 -16.   

Paul Seitz, son of Jym Seitz, and Hunter Bolsinger, son of Rod and Heidi Bolsinger of Guttenberg,  are the alternates for Post 373 in case one or both delegates are unable to attend.

Linderbaums mark 75th anniversary

Lawrence and Evelyn Linderbaum of Guttenberg reached a rare milestone in on Feb. 15 when they celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.

The couple spent most of their married life in the Monona area, but now reside in Guttenberg — Evelyn at the Guttenberg Care Center and Lawrence at the adjoining Eagle Ridge Assisted Living.
