Debra A. Ross

Debra Ann Ross, 59, of Colesburg, died on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester.

Visitation was Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Lone Pine Country Club in Colesburg.

Memorial services were Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Colesburg United Methodist Church in Colesburg, conducted by Pastor Joan Thomas.

Inurnment was at Zion Cemetery, Colesburg.

October is family history month. It’s an opportunity to research the branches and roots of our family trees, and a reminder that we are all connected. For one Guttenberg man, those family connections are rich in history.

Busy October school board meeting

The Clayton Ridge School Board of Directors met in regular session on Oct. 13. Members in attendance were John Heying, Christine Aulwes, Michael Finnegan, Alicia Helle, Ellen Johnson, Jason Reimer and Kathy Ihde. 

Heying was unanimously elected president of the board with Aulwes unanimously elected vice president. Mary Seifert was appointed board secretary with an hourly raise of 45 cents and Dave Schlueter was appointed treasurer. Board members Heying, Ihde and Finnegan will remain on the negotiations committee.

Guttenberg has been named one of two communities along the River Bluff Scenic Byway to receive funding for a public art project as part of a larger movement across Iowa’s byway corridors. Umbrella Arts and Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce have worked together to get city approval for the installation of a series of sculptures on light poles along the eastern side of River Park Drive in the historic downtown.

Methodists plan Election Day meal

Roast beef and pork roast will be on the menu at the traditional Election Day meal served at the United Methodist Church, 200 South First Street, Guttenberg, on Tuesday, Nov. 8, from 4:30-7 p.m. 

Rounding out the menu will be mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, cole slaw, rolls, pie, and beverages. 

Advance ticket prices are $10 for adults and $6 for childeren ages 3-10. Advance tickets must be purchased by Nov. 5. Adult tickets will be $2 higher at the door. Children age 3 and under eat for free. Carry-outs are available by calling 252-2153.

Main Street program Oct. 24

A Main Street 101 presentation will be held at 5:30 p.m. on the third floor of city hall on Monday, Oct. 24, for residents and the business community to learn more about how the Main Street program could work to revitalize Guttenberg. The mission of the Main Street Iowa Program is to improve the social and economic well-being of Iowa's communities by assisting selected communities to capitalize on the unique identity, assets and character of their historic commercial district.

Ghouls' and Goblins' Night Out will take place this Thursday, Oct. 20, from 5-7 p.m. at the shops in Guttenberg. The sixth annual event gives adults the opportunity to celebrate Halloween and support Guttenberg businesses. 

Merchants and shoppers are encouraged to dress in costume. Participating businesses are offering spooky sales, deadly discounts at participating restaurants, devilish door prizes, and cauldrons of complimentary refreshments while shopping.

Local baker adjusts to new gluten-free lifestyle

Guttenberg resident Joann Svoboda has spent hours upon hours in the kitchen, baking breads and cookies as flour poufs into the air. Her husband claims to have married her for one of her delicious cookie recipes, and on early Saturday mornings, shoppers would gather around her farmer’s market booth for loaves of her fresh-baked bread.

Parilee (Esser) McGeough

Parilee (Esser) McGeough, 77, of Las Vegas, Nev., died Sept. 17, 2016, after a short illness.

Services will be held Oct. 25, 2016, at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nev.

Parilee was born June 21, 1939, in Glen Haven, Wis., to Jerome and Thelma Esser. She graduated  from Guttenberg High School in 1958. On June 9, 1959, she married John McGeough at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Guttenberg. She worked at Doug's Steak House and Esser's Clothing in Guttenberg, and retired in 1992 from Central Phone Company in Las Vegas, Nev.
