Combat Veterans third annual ride this weekend


The Combat Veterans Chapter 39-3 gathered on June 25 in remembrance of Jim "Burley" Hansel of Guttenberg, who died in an accident earlier that day. Members were at this Memorial with Jim the day before he died. Hansel served as a door gunner on a helicopter in Vietnam. The third annual Combat Veterans  Motorcycle Association benefit ride is set for July 8-9 and includes a weekend of camping in Elkport and a Saturday ride that includes stops at Moxie's and the Dam Bar in Guttenberg.

The two-day event features music, vendors, fireworks, games, food, prizes and more. Registration is from 5-9 p.m. Friday and 7-11 a.m. Saturday at the Elkport Campground.

City council takes no action following closed session

The Guttenberg city council went into closed session at the end of a special city council meeting on June 27, citing the portion of Iowa code that allows for a closed session "when discussing strategy with counsel in matters that are presently in litigation or where litigation is imminent." The council took no action when returning to open session.

An updated Clayton County multi-jurisdictional multi-hazard mitigation plan is now available for public review and comment. Council members, city clerks, and mayors of cities within the county joined forces with the Clayton County Emergency Management Commission and Central, Clayton Ridge and MFL Mar-Mac school districts to draft the plan, which documents the county-wide hazard mitigation planning process and identifies relevant hazards, vulnerabilities and strategies the participating jurisdictions will use to decrease vulnerability and increase resiliency and sustainability.

The June meeting of the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital board was called to order at 5:30 p.m.  on Tuesday, June 28. Present were board members Doug Reimer, Janice Andregg, Bill Allyn, Karen Merrick, and Sue Osterhaus.

Jimmy Hansel

Jimmy Hansel, 66, of Guttenberg, died Saturday, June 25, 2016, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. 

Visitation was Thursday, June 30, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Burial was Sunday, July 3, at the Hansel Cemetery, rural Garber. A luncheon followed at the Elkport Community Center.

Otto A. Becker

Otto Albert Becker, 87, of Nunnelly, Tenn., died peacefully at home on June 26, 2016.

Otto was born May 16, 1929, in Clayton to John W. and Sylvia Becker.

He moved to Michigan in 1948 and was an active member of the Operating Engineers #324 for 32 years. He also owned and operated Otto’s Market in Hazel Park, Mich.

Timothy J. Kuempel

Timothy J. Kuempel, 64, of Guttenberg, died Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Visitation was Friday, June 24, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Saturday, June 25, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Guttenberg, conducted by  Rev. Richard G. Gaul. A reception immediately followed the funeral service in the St. Mary’s Church basement.

Robert De Koekkoek

Robert De Koekkoek, 78, of Frenchtown, died Sunday, June 19, 2016.

Memorial services were Thursday, June 23, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Penny Hansel officiating.

There will be an inurnment this coming fall at Hope Cemetery in Tyler, Minn.

Robert was born on Nov. 12, 1937, in Chanarambie Township, Murry, Minn., the son of Teunis and Pearl De Koekkoek.

Melvin Leo Matt, 85, of Des Moines, formerly of Garnavillo, died Friday, June 17, 2016, at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines.

Visitation was Wednesday, June 22, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo, and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Thursday, June 23, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.

Interment was at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Garnavillo.

Dale L. Hoffman

Dale LeRoy Hoffman, 80, of Dubuque, passed away Sunday, June 19, 2016, while enjoying a family dinner in celebration of Father's Day at his daughter’s home.

In honor of his wishes private family burial and celebration of life will be at Dubuque Memorial Gardens where both Dale and his wife, Darlene, who passed in 2014, will be interred together on their 58th wedding anniversary.

Military honors for Dale will be accorded by American Legion Post #6.
