Yale Drama Award named for Guttenberg native...Christmas gift unlocks a door to the past

Charles Finch of Guttenberg received a gift this past Christmas that honored the acting talent of his late sister and brought her career into sharper focus for the Finch family.

A framed montage containing  a photo of Carol Finch Dye and the history of a prestigious award named in her honor was presented to Charles by his son and daughter-in-law, John and Lisa Finch of Guttenberg. The keepsake tells the story of the Carol Finch Dye Award, presented for 30 years by the Yale School of Drama.

Proposed city budget calls for drop in property tax levy rate

The Guttenberg city council will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 7, on a budget for the coming fiscal year that calls for a small decrease in the city's tax levy rate. The budget anticipates approximate expenditures of $6.33 million and revenues of $6.32 million. 

The proposed budget covers the fiscal year from July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2017. If approved, the proposed rate per $1000 valuation on regular property would be $14.97794. This compares to the current year's rate of $15.11220.

Energy builds in Clayton County

A free solar energy workshop hosted by the newly formed Clayton County Energy District was held Thursday, Feb. 25, at Keystone AEA in Elkader. Nearly 100 interested people signed up in advance to learn the very latest technical and financial facts about the costs and benefits of solar energy.

A curious crowd gathered at the Guttenberg Public Library on Tuesday evening, Feb. 22, overfilling the nearly 30 seats in the meeting room. “What we can do tonight, I hope, is educate you and let you know what’s actually happening – not just in Guttenberg, but in the whole country,” said Joan Shannon of the Guttenberg Pharmacy.

Mine reserve study group to meet

The mine reserve study group for Clayton County will meet Thursday, March 3, and Thursday, March 17, at 5:30 in the Clayton County Office Building, 600 Gunder Road NE, Elkader. Members of the public are welcome to attend and listen, but may not be allowed to comment.

The group was formed in response to a request from Pattison Sand to rezone over 700 acres of land along Great River Road from agricultural to commercial for underground mining, and seeks to answer a variety of questions and concerns raised by the request.

Golden Oldies worship service at St. John's Lutheran Feb. 23

The public is invited to attend a "Golden Oldies" worship service at St. John's Lutheran Church in Guttenberg on Sunday, Feb. 28, starting at 10:15 a.m. The event is sponsored by St. John's and St. Paul Lutheran Churches. 

The service will feature praises sung to popular music of the 1950s and 1960s. "Everyone is welcome," invite organizers.

Tuition-free virtual school enrollment through March 1


Former Superintendent Allan Nelson was the driving force behind establishing the Iowa Virtual Academy, which opened for the 2012-2013 school year. The head of Iowa’s statewide online public school system, the Iowa Virtual Academy (or IAVA), makes his office right here at Clayton Ridge Schools. The Virtual Academy enrolled 305 students for the 2015-2016 school year, and Head of School Steve Hoff reminds parents that enrollment is now open for the 2016-17 year.

Todd A. Wilker

Todd Alan Wilker, 53, of Garnavillo, died Monday, Feb. 15, 2016, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

Visitation was Friday, Feb. 19, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo.

A private family inurnment will be at a later date.

Todd was born on Dec. 4, 1962, in Prairie du Chien, Wis., the son of Kenneth and Gaye (Frye) Wilker.

Emmett A. Pins

Emmett A. Pins, 67, of Luxemburg died Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016, at home surrounded by his family.

Visitation was Sunday, Feb. 14, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville and one hour before services.

Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 15, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Luxemburg, conducted by Rev. Richard Gaul.
